Not all subtitle text is working with vlc

Postby jmitz5 » 17 Sep 2019 04:30

In vlc, I usually have no problems with subtitles. However, there are some tracks that contain characters that won't load properly (showing as question marks in boxes).

Here are the Unicode names for some of the broken characters:

U+1D4D7 : MATHEMATICAL BOLD SCRIPT CAPITAL H
U+1F920 : FACE WITH COWBOY HAT

When I use QuickTime player (or load the subtitle file in TextEdit/google drive), they show up fine.

I don't think it is a problem with the font or encoding, since text edit and google drive say they are the same font as the surrounding text, and these characters don't change when I change their font.

In VLC, I have tried multiple fonts, including Unicode fonts. I have tried a few different encoding schemes. I even tried changing the text rendering module. Nothing makes these characters show up correctly like they do in every other program.

Are there any other settings I can try?
