Audio Cut Out

I am new to VLC and having an unusual issue. I'm trying to watch downloaded videos at accelerated speed. They download at mp4 files. When I open them they play normally. The I speed them up to 2x the audio cuts out for up to 1 minute of play time and then starts again. This continues even if I change where in the file I'm playing form - about a minute of silence, then it cuts back in. This also occurs if I pause for too long. Above 2x speed there is frequently not audio, even after letting the video play for 2+ minutes. What could cause this and how can I fix this? Is it an issue with the file being downloaded or the player? Thank you!

Are you using VLC 3.0.8? Is this on a Mac or some other device?
