Synchronisation of playback across 3 computers

Postby VelvetAvatarImpulse » 01 Jun 2019 11:11

Hi all,

I have been asked to set up a temporary 3x1 video wall to be used as a theatre backdrop.

The equipment I have available for this is 3x projectors (VGA only), and up to 3x Windows 10 laptops that are equipped with USB-C ports.

I initially considered operating all three projectors from the one display port, but there does not appear to be a feasible way of doing this (correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm now looking at allocating the playback of each "segment" to a separate computer, which will then be directly connected to a projector via a USB-C to VGA adapter.

The complication is, the playback of the three files will need to be synchronised to within a couple of frames of each other.

Is there any feature in VLC that will enable me to do this? Or can anyone suggest an alternative approach?

Most grateful for any advice offered.

Hi, if you have 3 differents files, you have these two solutions:

+ Use input_slave with multiple activated video track on only one desktop. I've never tested this with multiple video so it might not work, and you need enought connectors but it's the easiest solution.
+ Use udp network synchronization features
--network-synchronisation, --no-network-synchronisation
Network synchronisation
(default disabled)
This allows you to remotely synchronise clocks for server and client.
The detailed settings are available in Advanced / Network Sync.

the second one is probably what you're looking for

Hi there, I have a similar requirement. Did you ever find a working solution?
