Windows 10 64-bit: CD Audio doesn't play in VLC 3.0.7.1

Postby Odysseus Giacosa » 14 Jul 2019 12:54

Hi everyone.

I regret it greatly that, upon my first post on these forums, I have to report a long-standing CD Audio playback issue on VLC, which, as far as I've seen, goes all the way back to version 1.1.0. Both I and my wife have Windows 10 64-bit machines, and on both of our machines we have VLC 3.0.7.1 installed. Yet, we cannot play audio CDs; in Windows Explorer, the .cda files are shown as being only only 1KB in size, and they simply won't open in VLC. Please, do not suggest any "install the latest VLC" kind of "solution", as we both have the most recent versions installed. We know for a fact that VLC worked fine before for everything, including CD Audio.

Also:
Yes, we have audio enabled.
Yes, we've tried the "Open disc..." thing. Doesn't work.

I'd much rather see someone look for a possible shenanigan during one of Microsoft's recent Win10 updates that perhaps broke VLC's functionality than yet another rehash of the same old, non-working, advice. Thank you in advance.

LS,

Start VLC
Under Media tab : open disc
Under Disc tab : select Audio-cd and select the drive who has a cd in it.
Press play
wait a bit and the music will start

An alternative is Windows Media Player connected to the internet to get the missing information:
Organize: options : player tab , add remote media and connect to the internet.

I have a set of language CDs and each disk has a group of lessons each referenced by it's own cda file. Is there any way to set a shortcut to easily open lessons as they are required? I have set VLC player as the default for cda files but just clicking on a file in Explorer does nothing.

This solution does not work. VLC cannot read CDs, cannot play CDs, cannot convert files to a different format. It's completely broken and can't be fixed.

Menu Media -> Open Disc
Then make sure to tick the Audio CD option in the Disc Selection and the correct drive letter in Disc Device.
Works for me.
