massive time-lag after starting playback audio-CD

Postby doc_jochim » 13 Jun 2019 22:07

VLC 3.0.7.1
Win10pro64

Hi,
when I start playing an audio CD by clicking 'open Disc > AudioCD > Play', VLC seems to sleep for about 70 seconds...

The only action I see is a jumping status bar from left to right to left and so on...

After this semi-eternity, playback works as usual.

Why?

I already tried to change the CD => no change in behaviour
I already tried to start windows in safe mode => no change in behaviour
I already tried to uninstall and reinstall vlc => no change in behaviour
I already tried to change vom 32bit to 64bit VLC => no change in behaviour
I already tried to uninstall actual and install previous version 3.0.4 => no change in behaviour

What could be the reason for this problem?

foobar2000 and windows media player immediately start playing audioCDs, so I think it's not a problem with my CD-drive.

Thanks for your answers (and sorry for my bad english - school is already a long time ago...)

André

Hi,

I don’t play audio CDs with VLC, but I have a similar problem with Opus files ; I created a thread about it a few days ago. For me, it started after upgrading Windows 10 to version 1903. Are you in the same case ?

Because nobody answered and I didn’t find a solution, I switched to Audacious for the time being.

In my system, the possibility to update to Windows 10 v1809 was listed very late, so I updated to 1809 some weeks ago.

As I don't play CDs very often in my PC, I recognized the issue yesterday the first time. Perhaps it's really a problem related to windows update.

But is there noone else having these problems?

What could be te problem? Any preferences in VLC? I deleted cache and any preferences while un- and reinstalling VLC.

Yours

André

cddb lookup

disable metadata access or change server
:!: If you want your problem to be solved :
* First read troubleshooting guide VSG:Main
* Always provide verbose LOGS ! (command line or from gui)
* Always check your issue against a developer build from Nightly Build of VLC
* Tell us when your problem is solved !

Thank you for the suggestion, but I already had network access to metadata disabled. And again, it only happens with Opus files for me, although I haven’t tried with a CD

And I was talking about CDs.

Heard about the no thread hijacking guideline ?

Of course I have heard about it, but I thought that it could be the same issue. No need to get angry ! I will not post in this thread anymore

Same problem with audio CD's. Massive lag. (I had given up on getting VLC to work but walked away from one PC and came back some time later and it was playing the audio CD that I had forgotten to remove. Otherwise I would have never known it was a lag.) This is the same on four PC's all of which are running Windows 10 Pro 1903. Have tried various fixes, including older versions of VLC and 32 bit versions, all to no avail.

This flaw is unacceptable so please get us a fix or a temporary work-around.

Not sure about other media such as DVD's but will attempt later. As of now - any and all audio CD's are affected. Log files are extensive and point to problems but don't show any workaround avenues that I can see.

I'm wondering if this is an issue (or incompatibility) with the latest Windows feature update 1903 as it only became a problem after that upgrade. (Upgrade was done on four PC's, all of which now have the same VLC problem.) Windows Media Player works fine and also displays CD track info and other data which VLC no longer does. I've tried resetting VLC preferences but no luck there either. I have tried various audio CD's to be sure it's not an isolated issue with a particular CD.

I have the verbose 2 (debug) from messages saved as a file but no idea to how to post it on this forum. I've searched the forums, VLC's guide, the FAQ's and the web in general for instructions on how to do this but no luck so far.

--cddb-server=freedb.freedb.org
I tried the cddb-server=freedb.freedb.org (I think that's what you wanted me to do) and it helped the load time considerably but there is still a delay and still no displayed track data from commercial audio CD's.

--cddb-server=freedb.freedb.org
I disabled the metadata access as you suggested in an earlier post in this thread and that helped a lot. Still a bit of a lag and no track data but at least the tracks play realtively quickly.

Thanks.

Got it working! Tried your suggestion again for the "freedb.freedb.org" CDDB server and then checked the box to allow metadata. Closed VLC and restarted and I had quick playback and all CD track info. Yay!

Will see if this holds.

Thank you again "In The Wings".
