VLC 3.0.6 restart on .mov file but is able to convert them to .mp4

Postby SubArrin » 25 Mar 2019 08:37

When I try to watch a .mov file VLC (3.0.6) keeps restarting (I need to kill the app using Task Manager).
The same VLC manages to convert this file into .mp4 and then play this correctly .mp4

I tried reinstalling VLC - it didn't solve the problem.
VLC 3.0.6 on Mac OS is able to play this file.

Keeps restarting (multiple times per second) until I kill it using Task Manager.

I reset the preferences and then I uninstall the VLC and install it again (checking the box for reseting preferences again).

It happens both when I double click the .mov file or when I open VLC and choose open file in it. It immediately start keeping restarting.

If by 'restarting' you mean the entire VLC window flickers at about 15 times a second, I also have that problem, but started with v 3.0.4 on Windows 10.

Can you post some logs / upload the file somewhere?
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.

From windows command line or linux or macos terminal, launch vlc with options -vv and --logfile=file

  • Windows example: vlc.exe -vv --logfile=c:\vlclog.txt
  • Linux example: vlc -vv --logfile=vlclog.txt, or vlc -vv 2>&1 > logfile.txt
Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)

Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

Windows 10 Pro (10.0.17134 Compilation 17134) x64
VLC 3.0.6 Vetinari (jenkins@728791c5f812 Jan 9 2019 20:40:01)

It works perfectly fine on the same VLC version on 2015 MacBook Pro.

I tried to write logs.
I ran
C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC>vlc.exe -vv --logfile=c:\vlclog.txt
and open the file but it didn't write any logs.

Then I tried to immediately open the file from the command line:
C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC>vlc.exe -vv --logfile=c:\vlclog.txt D:\Download\PAND6103.MOV
but again no logs.

I uploaded the videos:
PAND6103.MOV - problematic raw file
PAND6103.mp4 - the same video converted to mp4 by VLC
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... k0_zYUfR2Q

And yes, by restarting I mean the entire window flickers very fast (multiple times per second). I think it is restarting because I cannot close it other way than by killing it from the task manager.

Are the files OK? Were you able to reproduce the issue?

What is missing?
Can you post some logs / upload the file somewhere?
Files uploaded:
I uploaded the videos:
PAND6103.MOV - problematic raw file
PAND6103.mp4 - the same video converted to mp4 by VLC
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... k0_zYUfR2Q
From windows command line or linux or macos terminal, launch vlc with options -vv and --logfile=file
As I wrote I tried and VLC didn't produce any logs:
I tried to write logs.
I ran
C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC>vlc.exe -vv --logfile=c:\vlclog.txt
and open the file but it didn't write any logs.

I provided that:

If you're using VLC 3.0.x and have video issues.
Try:

  1. Preferences -> Input/Codecs -> Disable hw decoding
  2. If you are a Windows user, Preferences -> Video -> Change from direct3d11 to direct3d9
If any solution works, please tell us which one solved your case, Please also quote your video driver name and version.

It started working better on VLC 3.0.7.1. Sometimes the video is stuck (showing all the time single frame).

Disabling hw decoding and changing DX solved the problems
