Missing special subtitles

Postby Starhorsepax » 25 May 2019 19:00

So far I've found it on movies like X-Men Wolverine, Star Wars and so on. In theaters, on regular DVD players and VHS foreign (to the viewer) and alien (as in non human) languages have subtitles.

But I can NOT get that to work on VLC. And that seems very wrong given that its surely not uncommon in sci fi fantasy movies! :?

The subtitles shows if I turn on close captions or something, but then it shows every word, every language not just the non English ones but both. So far my movie marathon day that was planned for months is derailed over VLC failing to have this basic option every standard DVD player I know has had. Surely I am missing something?!

I'm using Win 10 and that no longer has free DVD playback. My main DVD player went out some time ago so I REALLY hope there is a fix I've missed?

Hi, it should be supported. What version of VLC are you using ? Can you post the verbose logs of the playback so we can check what VLC found?
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

I'm having the same problem with Star Wars movies. Followed your advice. Below is what I got in messages. Keep in mind that I had to open the disc and navigate around until I found the part of the movie with the alien dialogue.

OS: Windows 10
VLC version: 3.03 Vetinari

Thanks for your help!

The solution to this with the Star Wars Episode IV DVD is that you need to select the Subtitle listed as "Track 3 - [Spanish]".

Once you do, you will see the subtitles for the alien languages. You will NOT see subtitles for anything spoken in english.

I haven't checked this with the other Star Wars DVD's yet. If I find differences, I will post them here as I find them.
