AVI files from QNAP Surveillance Station aren't playing on macOS

I'm using the Surveillance Station package on a QNAP NAS to record video from a camera. When I open the AVI files in VLC the codec details shows "QNAP H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (q264)". The timeline shows the correct video length and it looks like it is playing, but there is no video output (these files don't include audio).

So far I've only been able to play these files by passing them through handbrake, which shows the following output in the log.

This plays fine on Linux, with VLC 3.0.6

Interesting, it works on Windows as well. Not Mac or iOS though.

The logs I posted earlier (at the dropbox URL) show that the VLC version is 3.0.6. What they do not appear to show is that I'm running macOS 10.14.4.

Ok. Disable hardware decoding in preferences, and try again.

That did the trick! With "Hardware decoding" unchecked the videos play back now.

been pulling my hair out with this exact issue, running QNAP Surveillance workstation, can't view AVI files on a Mac running VLC (or ANY other video player!!)

seeing this with VLC 3.0.7.1, MacOS 10.3.6 - so bug not fixed with this latest version of VLC for Mac.

Turning off hardware decoding magically fixed the issue.

Thanks all for the workaround ! Hoping for a permanent fix soon please
