Cast to Roku TV

Postby trueboss926 » 24 Mar 2019 05:50

I don't think this can be hard to implement since you already have a feature for Chromecast. But can you let us also cast VLC to our Roku TV players?

I'm not sure what that is or how I can find it. I'm guessing it would be Miracast. But there are 2 options you could try with casting, either with Miracast or over the internet if the person has a Roku account.

You need to ask Roku.

From a quick search, it looks like Roku uses the DIAL protocol: http://www.dial-multiscreen.org/ / https://github.com/Netflix/dial-reference

DIAL doesn't seem to allow casting video directly, it needs VLC installed on the roku device and open it in a special mode to allow streaming from one device to the other. We currently don't even have the first so it doesn't seem likely.
It might be possible to use embedded Roku player instead of VLC on the roku device, but controls wouldn't be forwarded to VLC.

Yeah I got the same response from Roku:
DIAL is the default method developers use for casting on Roku. You can send an ECP command from a third-party app to a Roku device, to then deep link into a channel to play content.

We don't have documented information on this process, but you can certainly reach out to our developer community on our forums to see how others have accomplished this.

Wow, amazing. They do not document it... We could use those, if we get one of those boxes.

Well forum members

My VLC player, on my windows PC, can see my chromecast device but not stream to it anymore, but it cannot see my Roku 3 and therefore, as far as my VLC (3.0.8 Vetinari) is concerned, does not exist.

Can anyone say if the VLC developers are working on restoring VLC's "long lost" casting to chromecast facilities?

Hi,

For the roku case, we don't have a box so we would need one to support it.

For the chromecast case, do you have sample files that are not working ?
