VLC Looks really small on 4K screen windows 8.1

Postby torrentfreak » 18 May 2015 21:57

Hi guys I really hope someone can help me with this problem, I recently downloaded the 64 bit latest VLC player on my Dell inspirion 4k laptop (OS: windows 8.1 update)
but there is one annoying thing about VLC, the bar looks so small!!! I MEAN REALLY SMALL
see link here to the pic...
http://s8.postimg.org/dn9t6v3p1/bugs.png

I tried these things but none worked:
- changing the resolution
- DPI scaling to 250%
- disabling Autmatic DPI scaling for VLC
- Downloading the 32-bit version

Please someone HELP! I cant even stop/pauze because Its too damn small!

The answer to this is simple:

You have bought your 4K screen too soon.

All the software and media being put out right now is catered for the 1920 pixels market, and will be so for at least another few years. The time to go for 4K screens isn't now, but around 5-6 years from now, at best.

You will face this problem with many other applications and contents, and you will spend the next few years watching and playing all your stuff in ugly pixel stretched (zoomed up) mode.

My sincere and straightforward advice, thus, since you likely have some kind of guarantee receipt, is to have your 4K monitor returned asap and get a 27" to 32" 1920 pixel screen, if large screens are to your liking. In the unlikely event that you actually do need 4K for a specific professional purpose (let's say, if you work in CAD or the like), then I would go for a two screens setup, using the regular 1920 pixel one for everything else.

Sorry if this is not the answer you were looking for, but trust me, it's damn good advice.

@SuperArabe i don't think so, i have one too and VLC player is the only application which i'm using at the moment that has this problem.

@Jean-Baptiste Kempf We're working on it. <3 I'm looking forward to it. Maybe my reply here could help understanding the problem: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.ph ... 57#p443657

I don't think 4k monitor will become practical anytime soon.
Current cpu speed is too slow to cope with 4k resolution. Until there is a breakthrough in cpu speed, 4k won't be a big deal. this is the main reason that many complain choppy video! Don't buy 4k.

Sure. Use VLC 3.0.x
Hi there,

One of the latest 3.0.x versions has obviously brought back the issue that had actually been resolved in 3.0.0. I just updated from 3.0.0 to 3.0.3, and the playback control panel at the bottom end (which used to be fine since 3.0.0) is tiny again and unusable, like in earlier 2.x versions. What happened?

I'm using a high-res 27-inch display at 3.840 x 2.160 with Windows 10 scaling set to 150 %.

It seems everyone has a different configuration, and nothing works in the same way...

I'm not a software engineer, so no idea what's exactly happening on the technical side. But all other software works fine (and the other VLC elements look fine as well).

Looking forward to 3.0.4...

(Maybe a forum admin could change the thread's subject and delete "Windows 8.1" as this is a general Windows issue.)

Pity, still not okay in 3.0.4. The bottom control panel is tiny and completely unusable with the (very common) display setting mentioned above.

May I suggest one more time to remove "windows 8.1" from the thread title as this is a general issue (I'm using Windows 10).

Thanks

Just thought I give it another try and updated VLC to 3.0.6. Still the same problem.

As there has been no change through the last couple of versions and no reaction to the problem: Are you planning to support high-res displays on Windows in the future?

(Still, this is NOT only a Windows 8.1 issue but Windows 10.)

This is a bug with Qt.

Related bug reports:

The rewrite of the UI is also workarounding this issue by not using QtWidget;

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I just didn’t get your point, maybe parts of your text have been cropped - are you guys working on rewriting the UI to avoid this issue?

No, there is a rewrite of the UI either way, but as it is using QML instead of QtWidget, it supports fractional scaling and works correctly.

The issue itself is that not every part of QtWidget (used by the current interface) supports fractional scaling.
