You are lucky I stumbled upon this thread looking for something else. Even luckier that Imade an account since you're all illiterate dummies computer and actual reading comprehension-wise. Sorry, but not really for the mean words, but if you're going to attack the devs of the best player ever despite the fact that its free, you deserve it. They probably ignored you guys because you are all toxic, to say the least
Now since you guys are lacking in the intelligence area edtekk22 answered this two years ago in 2017😂
Sorry for coming off mean but you guys started it and I can see why the devs just let you suffer since all it takes is a little common sense😂 and even if you don't have that then you could have just read the post by edtekk22 who answered the question 2 years ago🤣🤣
Signed up just to tell you, your wrong-
This is a feature that almost every Other media player has- without having to jump through hoops, go through menus, or navigate directories in order to do so.
I suggest you check out Media Player Classic because I don't think you understand the convenience aspect of the feature. You just open a file, by double-clicking the file- no opening the program then selecting open file and browsing directories until you find the file. No need for a drop-down menu, adding/opening folders. It just works.

Yes the way mentioned 2 years ago functions, but it's not very convenient to use when you have video files in multiple folders, nor does it actually answer the original question/statement
So if anyone knows if there's a way to do this WITHOUT doing a playlist or having to navigate to a folder, that would be great.
Also, this post started 4 years ago, and it's still a feature that is worth adding to the software.

There is an option to not recurse in directories. It's been there for like 15 years.

Having said that, playing the content of a directory "in sequence" does not mean much. Filesystems do not generally provide a meaningful order to files in a directory.

With MPC I can just double click on any TV show file (ex: Cold Case File s6 e1), and always be a single click away if I want to watch the next episode. With VLC I need to close it, open a folder, navigate to the folder I want and find the file I want to watch. The two best fixes ive found: Always keep that folder open (lol) or always build a playlist (which takes too much work considering I might close VLC after watching one episode, or need to reboot pc, etc).

Playing the contents of a directory in sequence is a massively important feature to some people. Ive been using MPC for years but I really like how VLC handles many things (and how it performs better). The main two crippling issue stopping me from making VLC my default video app is the lack of this feature + its in refusal to open up VLC in the correct screen/monitor of the file I opened it from (instead choosing to open VLC from the last display it was on, even if that display is turned off).

The point is that there is not a The One Sequence of files in a directory. The order of files in a directory is meaningless, and might not correspond to any sort of logical order.

Maybe you want alphabetic order, or maybe you want numerical order. But neither of those are "The Sequence".

This feature really is needed. I've been frustrated by not having such a basic feature on what I'd consider otherwise one of the best players out there. VLC is not my default player on Windows because of this one simple fact. Do you know what is? MPC, and that's simply because with MPC, I can navigate to any folder in Windows Explorer, double-click on a file, and it will play that file and sequentially play the next file (in alphabetical order, mind you, for the developer that answered before me who seems to want to be pedantic about this) and the next file until all the files in that parent folder are finished. Even players like the native Movies & TV app and KMPlayer do this. I've always been flabbergasted why, when VLC seems to have every other functionality and more besides that other players do not have, it continuously fails to have what I'm now sure many people consider a vital function. This thread alone proves this; this is one use-case that deserves attention.
I really hope the devs look into this and implement what I'm sure must be a simple workaround, seeing as quite a few other major players have this functionality already.

If you are unsure of the Order which the user wants, create an option to select the prefered ordering method for god's sake

If the VLC can create playlists via command line with three different types of sorting (see the --directory-sort option in vlc-help.txt - it also has a --ignore-filetypes and the already mentioned --recursive option) then i dont see why the VLC can not just (optionally) create a playlist in its program directory which always gets overwritten with the current directory contents when a user clicks a file from the file manager and then starts playing that list at the position of the clicked file.

A hack from userland would be to create a wrapper script which creates that playlist and then calls the VLC with it. Then assign the filetypes not to the VLC but to the script. However, that is not so practical because the VLC has no option to open a playlist at a specific position. It makes no use if the user clicks a file from within the file manager and then another file gets opened in the VLC and the user first has to search for the clicked file in the playlist, no? If you could provide such an option i would love to create such a script.

I like how many image viewers like Irfan View handle images: Click the image from file manager, it opens, then middle mouse in the image viewer loads the previous/next image in the directory. I would like to have this behavior as an option in the VLC. Like many others in this forum thread. Please do us the favour :)

I keep returning to this post whenever I run into issues with my current media player, to check if any progress is being made. But it's either no interest from the developers, or insults from random forum members who have some twelve click workaround to suggest. For the moment, VLC remains my backup media player, to watch files that other players stumble on. Just for lack of "ad hoc current folder playlist creation".

Do you really think people are going to read this thread, seeing the aggressiveness of the OP and of the posters?

Reading again, I still don't get the point of this thread, who speaks about at least 3 different issues.

If you have an issue, make it clear, and short and explicit, with a polite tone.

Locking it.
