Changing to VLC from Win Media player

I'm in the process of transferring LPs to digital format and have used Win's Media Player in conjunction with my Onkyo receiver. WMP has become frustrating with the volatility of the program. Also something has stepped on WMP program and the result is WMP will not accept another album folder into the Library (84 folder limit).

I've begun using VLC and I'm having a number of issues with the software.
1. How do I switch the media streaming from WMP to VLC?
2. If I use the "Media Information" to fill out the pertinent information for each album, save it, the information is then lost. What am I missing to make the info sticky?
