Hi @meghanne11, would you have logs too for when it doesn't work?
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

Casting also isn't working for me (to a vanilla Google Chromecast with the latest firmware update using VLC 3.0.4 on macOS Mojave 10.14.2). I just see the title of the video pop up and then a spinning wheel in the bottom left-hand corner of the screen.

Logs at:
https://pastebin.com/W0nD7u7G
(Removed a lot of almost-identical "could not write frame" messages.)

I started having issues with rendering to Chromecast today (on mac). It would play fine on my computer screen but once I tried to render to Chromecasat, it would act like it's about to render, video screen would collapse to show the video title in the library, and then the pause button on the media bar at the bottom would turn into the play button (indicating it wasn't playing and I needed to press play for it to start) and then nothing would happen when I clicked play.

Here's what I did to fix it:

VLC > Preferences... > Reset All
Then, after the window closes, you'll see a pop up that says "Check for album art and metadata?" and click "Enable Metadata Retrieval"

Then try running the video file again, render it to your Chromecast, and it should render fine.

Hope this helps!

Same issue as all other posters here.
Running a MBP. Casting was working previously but now it isn't. It looks like the video will play, turns on the TV and shows the video file title but then it just never plays.

I have already tried all the techniques described above but nothing helps :(

Thanks!

Hi, there have been some fixes recently for the chromecast, could you try running a nightly version of VLC just so as to check that it solves your issues ?

Not certain what was accounted for and settled, but rather 3.0.3 doesn't work for me with something officially bound to 8080 (I think it was 8080 at any rate). It'd be decent if it's ready to locate a free port.
I'm not 100% sure, but I think it has already been addressed in later versions.

Should I try the 3.0.7 or 4.x one? I updated to 3.0.6 but still experience the same issue. Thx!

A nightly one: https://nightlies.videolan.org/

The goal is not to replace your current VLC version but only test that the next version would fix your issue, so that you don't have to wait another version.

Yeah, chromecast have been upgraded. :/

Hi all,

Just had the same issue with the last official version - 3.0.6, but downloaded 4.0.0-dev and was able to play the video. With 3.0.6 I wasn't able to see the Certificate popup - that was the difference for me.

However, when the video played initially, the sound was very bad - heard only loud buzzing, but clicking further in the video seems to have fixed it.

I am on Win 10, casting a .mkv on Sony Android TV. Does anyone have the same experience?

EDIT: I also can't seem to make any subtitles work.. Not sure how/if it usually works, though.

Cool, thanks. Sorry, I'm quite new here as you can probably tell - which sample do you want me to upload? Of the video file? :)

Hi! Sorry for the delayed response - I was out of town for some time.

I did some testing with a bunch of .mkv samples I downloaded and found 2 different issues - some files could not be played at all - the TV just does nothing.
The second issue used to be with the loud buzzing noise when the video is played. In the latest nightly build the sound seems to be fine, but the picture is very choppy.

So, I uploaded a few of the samples in my Drive - link here.

If you prefer them uploaded somewhere else, I can do that.

Let me know if anyone needs any further details.

EDIT
Actually in the latest nightly all videos are choppy - disregard what I said about the second issue. :(

Dear everybody,

I had the same problem using VLC and Chromecast. Some people here gave the right solution for Windows but did not give the details, only that it was a HTTP problem. In Windows 10 it is the firewall rule that prevents VLC to properly cast to my chromecast.

The only thing you have to do in the standard Windows firewall is to make an exception for this program!

1. Go to your Windows Defender firewall (if you do not know how to do that ask somebody with the right computer skills to do that for you!!!!
Image

2. Make a new inbound and after that a new outbound rule! The procedure is the same! You need to make a Program Rule
Image

3. Go to the path of your VLC player. In my Windows 10 64 bit version it is: %ProgramFiles%\VideoLan\VLC\vlc.exe or "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe"
Image

4. Give it a name VLC, apply and enable and you are done with this problem!!

The pictures do not show up, you can find them here!!

So you guys are talking about Windows, but this is the Mac forums, or are you running a Virtual Desktop?

Anyhow, I'm on a Macbook Pro, latest MacOS version (Mojave 10.14.5) , latest VLC version (3.0.7.1), and at first I couldn't get the casting to work, but after resetting preferences, it did cast audio, but not the video.
Any insights?

Log here on Pastebin:
https://pastebin.com/caYZuet8

Since there wasn't a screenshot or description how to change the verbosity level (for Mac!), I didn't change anything... Only found Messages under the Window tab/thing in the top bar of the screen.

Any tips welcome!!

// EDIT: I think my question is redundant now, I tried a gazillion times (headstrong, yeah) and different orders of action (first render > chromecast, then playing
a file, or first playing, then selecting the chromecast. Etc etc), and finally I got it to work two times, but it seems subtitles do not work. (also, the first time it worked with audio + video, VLC crashed on me immediately lol.)

Since I'm watching subbed anime, it's kind of important to have subtitles, haha. I guess I'll try to cast from Plex.. although I mainly use Plex so my sister who still lives at my parents can stream my media, never really used it as a media player.

Unfortunately, subtitles are currently not supported through chromecast because of chromecast limitations and architectural needs.

Eventually it will come but it needs some work before.

I have also been having trouble with casting to Chromecast since the Chromecast update. I'm using VLC 3.0.8 on Mac Mojave. However, I now have a reliable workaround:

With some videos, VLC initially fails to realise that it needs to convert the video, and tries to stream it unconverted, which results in a black screen with the small blue Chromecast icon in the centre. I can reliably reproduce this with one particular mpeg-4 video and can provide more details if it would be useful. I can also repeatably get this video to cast ok by doing the following:

- disconnect from the Chromecast
- play a few seconds of the video
- cast again

This time, VLC realises that it needs to convert the video, and then it plays ok.

My not-rendering to Sony Android TV (7.0) occurred again and currently not working with 64-bit VLC 3.0.8. Worked fine a couple weeks back, now just keeps on Scanning... and doesn't find my Android TV. My Windows version is 10 with latest 1903 updates. Haven't made any other changes than Windows updates...

I have tried / enabled:

1) Made Windows Defender Inbound / Outbound rules for VLC
2) Changed the Transcode settings > disabled Video encoder (was "Auto")

With these settings I could render VLC play content to my TV but all of the sudden, not anymore...

Windows to blame?

A recent windows update disabled the VLC firewall entry rules on the Windows Firewall. Re-enabling those made it work again.
I had TCP and UDP allowed for VLC in allports.
