subtitles: suddenly stopped working

Postby tuk » 04 Dec 2009 17:15

have been using vlc for years ...subtitles have stopped showing and assumed it was just that 1 movie ...so i tested with my archive films that I know for sure the subs work ok on vlc ...and now not 1 of them shows subtitles ...so i guess that rules out the source files

tried:
re-installing different version of vlc
resetting vlc prefs
advanced open file
dragging subs onto screen
video/subtitles track/open file

nothing seems to work

Does it help if you remove %appdata%\vlc folder?

No ..subs still not showing ....movies.subs work fine on wmp classic ...even tried re-installing the k-lite codec pack(default settings as before) as Im running out of things to try other than re-installing windows.

update:
turns out ..that vlc tries to open or uses 'Arial.TTF' .(windows fonts) ...and in my case somehow the file/font got renamed to 'Arialtbg.ttf' ..hmmmmmmmn ...anyway downloaded the 'Arial.TTF' font and popped it into: C:\WINDOWS\Fonts ...and now it works

Subtitles stopped showing from one DVD disc to the next. Went back to earlier one & the subtitles had disappeared. Have tried all the appropriate stuff but no success in restoring them. Help! Can you make it easy (LOL), I'm a senior. Edit: now spasmodic subtitles show up where I don't need them.

The subtitle issue with DVDs was fixed in 3.0.6, so you only have to update :)

Unfortunately, updating did not fix it. What else, please?

Did it stop working after you updated to a specific version?

Did you try to reset VLC's preferences?

(Almost) the same thing here: have been using VLC for years and with 3.x versions the subtitles have stopped showing (no auto-loading).
Any type of subs: plain .txt subs with {} or [] (this was very common format) with movies with any format (avi, mp4, mkv etc.) that any other player can handle.
I've checked also my old movies burned on DVD+/-R discs, copied them to HDD and also tried directly from DVD+/-R, so I'm sure that they are ok, and v2.2.6 and other players worked fine, but v3.0.6 not showing subtitles automatically. The same situation with 3.0.2 and 3.0.4.
On two machines with Win7 x64 Pro and even on live WinPE 10 x64. I've checked few options like:
- reset preferences
- complete deinstallation of previous version (eg. v2.2.6 - it worked fine) and even
- virgin installation on fresh Win7 x64
- deleting %AppData%vlc folder
Nothing helps - in v3.x the subtitles I must open manually via menu and they are working, but not automatically like in earlier versions up to 2.2.6, which is my previous long lasting (almost) stable version. I've also checked 3.0.2 and 3.0.4 - same like 3.0.6, and now I'm going back to v2.2.6...

Recent update:
I also checked:
v3.0.6 (x32 on Win7x64 Pro) - no autoloading, only manual
v3.0.7-20190124-0510-win64 (nightly) - no autoloading, only manual
v4.0.0-20190124-0831-dev-win64 (nightly) - no autoloading, only manual
v2.2.8 (x64) - autoloading works ok, installed this one and I'll try it

I just found: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/21462
It seems that VLC since v3.x is not supporting the autoloading of subs in TMPlayer or similar format with .txt extension, and will not support them anymore.
Proposed solution is: "use different subtitle format". Not the best solution IMO - I manually and thoroughly edited many of the subtitles before burning them on DVDs...
Just tried this: https://addons.videolan.org/p/1276669/ - it needs additional speps to properly install and even then - it needs additional clicking to activate the subs.
So it does not make the solution easier, and therefore v.3.x will be not all-in-one best player for me and I suppose also for many people who have movies burned on DVD-/+Rs.
Like user sc0ty said: "adding the option to edit list of extensions of subtitle files would be the best option"
Else if the next step will be in similar flavour like: "oh, there are some problems with some format, so then VLC will drop earlier mostly proper behaviour or simply VLC will drop the support for that format" then I will be simply forced to switch to other player.
