Audio playback issues; audio cuts out at regular intervals

Postby branimir1999 » 16 Jul 2018 16:52

So, all of a sudden, my VLC keeps cutting out audio at regular intervals which are around 5.5 seconds. The video playback is completely fine, but the audio, standalone or part of the video, cuts out after 5.5 seconds of real-time playing. Debug messaging tells me the audio playback is way too late so VLC flushes buffers, while if screw around with the options I get a mixture of too early and too late. VLC worked perfectly fine prior, I don't know what changed in the meantime. I've tried changing audio modules but it makes no difference, I've tried changing file caching but that only changes how long the audio cuts out and I've tried disabling the hardware acceleration, among other things. I am using Win 10 and my specs shouldn't be a problem if it worked before.

Hi,

could you provide logs?
Does this happens with every media?
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

No, it happens only to VLC and as I said before, it suddenly started happening without any apparent causation. My OS is Windows 10 Pro and the VLC version is the latest one but I've updated it with the latest nightly build and still keeps happening.

It looks like you're having the exact same problems I'm having (see: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=144662 ). I can also confirm that Beta 4.0.0 20180717-0520 (64 bit) doesn't appear to fix the problem.

I've tried back as far as 2.0.0 and 1.1.9 (both 32 bit versions), and while the issue is markedly improved, it still seems to exist.

Edit: branimir1999, see if a reboot fixes your problem. If it's the same as mine, it only occurs after waking from sleep.

I've tried restarting but it has no effect.

I've tried disabling all S/PDIF devices and now I get combinations of playing way too late, way too early, up-sampling and down-sampling, which makes the music sound even worse than silence.

Yours persists through a reboot? Fascinating. I wonder if there's some other software or driver conflict, I don't have this issue anywhere other than VLC.

I had the same issue, restarted and it seemed to fix it.

Same problem here. Windows 10, VLC 3.03. Audio cuts out for about 1.5 seconds at regular intervals, about 11 seconds in my case. This makes VLC a non-usable program.

Really is disappointing, a program that I've loved and used for years is not usable for me any more. Other media players work fine, actually *anything* that plays media on this PC works without flaws, except VLC. On this same PC with Ubuntu 14.04 and VLC 2.2.2 there are no problems.

VLC 2.2.2 in windows 10 has the same problem, albeit at a shorter interval between cutouts/

Restarting the PC obviously doesn't fix this issue. it's persistent and and can only be attributed to VLC.

Changing the output module does not fix the problem no matter which module is selected.

changing 'skip h.264 in loop' option to 'all' does not fix the issue.

FWIW:
Ryzen 1700X, Asus Crosshair VI Hero, though I'm using an Asus Xonar DGX instead of the onboard audio. I've tried the official Asus drivers as well as unofficial ones (that are purportedly better) without any fix (though, some of the drivers do make it worse).

Do you have some clean/optimization software for energy or something?

Using 32 or 64 bits?

Hello dear VLC Community,

I have exactly the same issue that drove me crazy.
I tried all the audio output modules, played around with volumes and even reinstalled the operating system. All without success.

I came to the conclusion that my issue had to be with the new hardware.
I have a Ryzen 7 2700X, Aorus X470 Ultra Gaming and 16 GB DDR4-3200 G.Skill RipJaw Black.
Instinctively I reset my overclocked cpu from 3.9GHz back to 3.7GHz (default) and suddenly the issue disappeared.

I hope my experience will help someone.

Re: Audio playback issues; audio cuts out at regular intervals

That's an interesting analysis, but it doesn't make sense to me why my overclock wouldn't cause an issue with VLC until after I resume from sleep/standby, nor would it explain why only VLC is affected (and other programs are not).

Do you have some clean/optimization software for energy or something?

Using 32 or 64 bits?
I don't know what is meant by "clean/optimization software for energy". If you mean power-management software, no: I am not running any third-party power management software (mine is a desktop PC). It may be a stretch, but as I have a Ryzen processor, I am using the "AMD Ryzen Balanced" power plan that is built into Windows.

I am using the 64 bit version of VLC. Just updated to 3.0.4, but the issue persists (at least, immediately after the upgrade; if it vanishes after a subsequent reboot + sleep + resume, I will respond.

More often than not, audio problems are a drivers issue. I think it's safe to say that if it was vlc which was at fault then everybody would be having the same issue.

As a first troubleshooting step go to Windows Device Manager and expand "Sound, Video and Game Controllers". Right click each controller if there's more than one and then click "Uninstall". Reboot the computer and Windows will reinstall them for you. Then go check vlc playback again.

To go directly to Device Manager, hit Windows key + R to open the Run command and type (or copy/paste from here) devmgmt.msc and click OK.

If the problem persists, open an elevated command prompt and run sfc /scannow to check for corrupt operating system files. If you see the message "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" use the same command prompt to run the following command:

  • DISM.exe/Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
You'll find an elevated command prompt by hitting Windows key + X and then click the menu option "Command Prompt (Admin)

DISM fixed a problem on my own machine quite recently. Here's a screenshot of it.

I should add that running DISM can take a while and an hour or more is not unusual depending on how much corruption was detected. After 20-30 minutes though, you'll see the figure 20% appear followed by 100% when it completes.

Go Tools>Preferences>Audio>Output Module> (now pick one that seems to work)

Windows Mutimedia Device worked for me
but DirectX and WaveOut are also common choices.

Update: So it would seem that this is not a permanent fix as I am having the same problems again. So looks like something in the new Win10 update probably is the reason. Bottom line is I don't think any tweaking is going to help and the coders behind VLC need to fix it.

I narrowed this down on my PC, if you have Cisco WebEx Meetings installed try removing it. As a solid test have VLC going at the same time. My mp3 stopped during WebEx uninstall and the problem has gone away in VLC. Let me know if this helps anyone

As a browser extension or as a stand-alone install?

So, this may be hardware-based. I updated my BIOS (Crosshair VI Hero) from 3502 to 6401, and also backed-off of my overclock from 3.8 to 3.7. This morning, I appeared to have no audio skipping with VLC after resuming from sleep (which was the classic scenario, before, that caused my issues). I'm not sure either of those intuitively make a lot of sense, but it's hard to argue with results.

Changing Audio device doesn't work. Log looks like this:

Code: Select all

main warning: playback way too early (-120493): playing silence main debug: inserting 5783 zeroes main warning: playback too early (-43993): down-sampling main warning: timing screwed (drift: -95577 us): stopping resampling main warning: playback too early (-96577): down-sampling main warning: playback way too early (-120514): playing silence main debug: inserting 5784 zeroes main warning: playback too early (-41014): down-sampling main warning: timing screwed (drift: -84660 us): stopping resampling main warning: playback too early (-84660): down-sampling main warning: playback way too early (-123368): playing silence main debug: inserting 5921 zeroes main warning: playback too early (-41014): down-sampling main warning: timing screwed (drift: -87681 us): stopping resampling main warning: playback too early (-90681): down-sampling main warning: playback way too early (-122535): playing silence main debug: inserting 5881 zeroes
Audio cuts out for about half a second every 5-6 seconds.

Intel i7-2600K, RX580 GPU, Windows 10, 64 bit version 3.0.6

LatencyMon reports everything perfectly fine.

had this problem for years on my old w7 system,,just installed w7 64 bit on a new comp, and thought i had sorted the problem,,no cutout for 2 days, however, after updating windows today (i used a 10 year old original setup disc),it seems the cutout is back, ive only installed 9 updates so far,in cluding service pack 1,so it is possible that windows update is causing the problem.
