First result for "VLC" in Windows Search is to reset preferences

Postby ecnepsnai » 18 Oct 2018 21:09

When you search for "VLC" on Windows 10, the first result that comes up (for me, at least) is the shortcut to reset preferences and local cache.

While I understand that this isn't a bug with VLC, it may be a good reason to take a look at the value of installing a start menu shortcut to reset preferences. I don't feel that there is signifant need for this shortcut, also considering that it isn't present on other operating systems. Is there a problem with preferences preventing VLC from opening on Windows that warrants a start menu shortcut like this?

There's also a link to the vlc player in your screenshot. I think it's just Windows 10 listing all available options.

Why don't you just create a shortcut to it in your Start menu? Then you wouldn't have to run a search for it every time. Just right click the approrpiate search result for vlc player and then click "Pin to Start" or "Pin to taskbar" (or both).

I'm not looking for a solution here to my specific problem, I'm asking why is VLC including a start menu shortcut to reset preferences in the first place?

Did you downbload it from the Videolan site, or from the Microsoft store, or possibly from softonic or similar?

I think this came from Ninite, but you raise a good point, it may be Ninite that put this shortcut here. Let me uninstall and install directly from the official website and see if that shortcut is still there.

On a different computer that has not had VLC installed before I installed it right from the videolan website and had the same results in Windows search, so this doesn't appear to be Ninte.

Perhaps this would be better reported as a change request to not install this shortcut?

What happens if you right click the unwanted shortcut and delete it? Does it come back again?
