windows insider program, not allowing VLC playback?

Postby narcjoe » 08 Oct 2018 23:50

I've been in the Windows 10 insider program for about 3 years now. Just recently, it seems as if windows 10 may be blocking the use of VLC for any video playback. I am VERY familiar with using VLC, and have been using it for more than 10 years. Now when I go to play a playlist, the video freezes before the 1st video is even finished playing. When the video freezes, I am forced to have to press the reset button on the front of my tower. This "freezing" problem has been a "recent" issue and I'm guessing this problem had started before VLC version 3.0 was released. I have always kept it updated, and have tried the most recent versions, but found a version that is prior to-version 3 in my downloads, so i downgraded to whatever version I'm currently on. This did not fix my issue.

I recently tried playing this same playlist on windows media player, and every file played with no freezing up. (codec pack installed) This being the case, I have dropped out of the windows insider program in hopes that I am able to return to VLC for watching the files stored on my computer.

Since dropping out of the insider program, I attempted to play a playlist, and it froze up again. Could this be somewhere in my settings? In my VLC settings I have always had it checked to increase the priority of the process. Somewhat recently I brought up task manager under details and increased the priority there for VLC, (as I have seen that doing this to to the app Kodi, it had helped out with crashing.) But I had since set VLC priority to normal under Task Manager, thinking that doubling up the increased priority, MAY have been causing the freezing.

My question is, is there anything that can be suggested that can help out with this freezing issue? Should I think about uninstalling / reinstalling? I really would hate to, mess up my customization / preferences. LOL

You can check in Windows Control Panel ---> Default Programs to see whether VLC is registered as the default to open video files and others.

There are two options there which are "Set this program as default" (after you click vlc player to highlight it) and "Choose defaults for this program". The latter opens a list of file types for which a default player is selected. Run through that list and remove the checkmark from any file which has Windows Media Player set as the default.

Next, go back one menu and click the option to set vlc player as the default player for all the files it can open (you can always change this again at a later date via the same method).

I'm using Windows 8.1 by the way so the names of the menus may have changed for the above mentioned items in Windows 10, but it shouldn't be too difficult to find them.

Also, disable "Hardware-accelerated decoding" in VLC. You'll find it via Tools ---> Preferences ---> Inputs/Codecs. You'll see it at the top in the Codecs menu.

Hi Y'all
I have a nearly similar problem (crashes when trying to open .vob) so I went through checking the above settings. VLC was already the default player and it owned .vob.
Note: also I un-installed, re-installed current and older versions.
This is a Lenovo, which did play .vob prior to 3.x
