Subtitles not working in VLC 3.0.3 that work under VLC 2.2.8?

Just registered to post how I solved it.
I had the same issue and did a reinstall. There is an option on the bottom on the list of every part to install that says something like clear settings and cache.
I ticked this and then my issue was resolved.

I did same thing but not solved. Still the program see all kind of subtitles but english even no added the list, is not recognized by the program.

Hi guys, I'm joining this topic as for me – subtitle are not loading as well. There's not much in the logs – you can find them at the bottom.

VLC 3.0.4
macOS 10.12.6

First I'm loading the movie, subtitles are in the same folder but not loaded. Manually adding them and then I'm pausing the playback. All that can be found in logs with no further explanation.

I confirm it works all fine on 2.2.8.

I can confirm that this is a problem with VLC 3.0.6 but works fine with VLC 2.2.6
In my case it seems to recognize the subtitle files, loads them up, but does not recognize the language.
In the subtitle menu it lists track 1, track 2, track 3 but not the language. They listed fine in VLC 2.2.6

I confirm that subtitles are offen not working, even with DVDs (kind of 1 dvd every 10 shows subtitles, the other not, mostly tried with European DVDs).

Confirming that the OP is not the only one having this issue. I followed nearly the same process, encode with handbrake, use Subler to add meta data. I would add .srt files to the folder witht he movie (same name). Under the previous VLC it would display the subtitles in the window. Now it won't show the subtitles, additionally, egardless of whether I have "Show video within the main window" enabled, it shows two video windows. One actively has the movie, the other has a random shot from the movie and a progress bar. Closing either window closes the other window too.

I just redownloaded the app through the website (previously I had let it auto-update, and at least initally it seems to be showing subtitles, but I'm still having the double video window issue.

I reverted to VLC 2.2.8 and everything works as expected; subtitles display and no double video window issue

I've followed all the above and reverted back to VLC 2.2.8 but I'm still seeing the double window and no subtitles when adding them to the player (from the same folder and also .srt) ..... so annoying. Does this mean this has something to do with my MAC OS and not VLC itself?

Just ran into this issue with VLC 3.0.18. Subtitles don't show when NDI output is selected.

The workaround is to set hardware-accelerated decoding to "disabled" in the Input/Codecs preference.
Other choices (Direct3D and DXVA 2.0 for me) don't work.

Not the best thing to do especially in a streaming setup where CPU resources can grow thin very quickly, but it works.

(VLC 3.0.18 x64 on Windows 11)
