VLC player hangs after 3.03 Update

Hello,

A long time VLC user here.

Just updated to the latest version 3.03 (from 2.26) via the client update and immediately noticed a hitherto non-existent problem. Every time I add one of my playlists (containing several folders from different directories spread across my personal drive), VLC goes about calculating the total playtime of the entire playlist with significant CPU usage and a partial hang with only way out being a termination via task manager. Happens every single time - Please see the screenshot below.

This was never the case with the earlier versions. It would only update the playtime and populate the same in the playlist right pane only upon clicking the respective folder which in my opinion is more efficient.

Another thing I noticed the first time upon launching VLC is that the three sub categories (My Videos, My Pictures & My Music) under My computer tab scans and populates the respective files from the whole disk (partitions) with the exception of maybe the OS drive, which again is a security/privacy issue. VLC shouldn't be scanning every running/mounted partition by default and instead should give us users exclusion rights. Not sure if this issue is persistent because since a reset of the preferences, the three tabs only populate entries from the windows user folder which is fine in my opinion. Maybe you can have a look.

The first issue though makes VLC unusable for now. Also, it would be nice if we had better control of the logs (Messages) dialog box. As of now a hang makes it difficult either to copy the logs or try a save.

PS:Please consider adding a playlist resize display-size (detailed view) option, more than what's possible now. Please don't follow Microsoft and give us microscopic font size needing a magnifier.

I can also confirm like the others that the video quality is extremely poor. There's significant pixelation although the audio plays along just fine. It's a whole lot worse with handbrake encoded mp4 videos. User encoded videos have always been problematic but no where near to this extent.

It seems version 3 is a complete overhaul from previous versions only for the worse, sadly. Going back to 2.26 is the only workaround for now, I think.

Unfortunately, I mistakenly deleted the logs from the disk and can't seem to recover it with Recuva. The only option now is to reinstall version 3 and regenerate the logs. I'll probably do it sometime soon and get back to you. But as said in the OP, getting the logs to save when there's a hang is really iffy. I'll try anyways.

@Jean-Baptiste Kempf - Missed your last post. Wasn't aware of the 7z version.

Any way tried a reinstall of the same version (3.03) today. For some weird reason things weren't as bad as last time. There was no significant hang initially although the CPU usage was quite high unlike normal. Also, switching between the player and the playlist window causes intermittent/permanent hang with the player not responding. Happens with or without 'Hardware acceleration'.

Another thing I noticed the first time upon launching VLC is that the three sub categories (My Videos, My Pictures & My Music) under My computer tab scans and populates the respective files from the whole disk (partitions) with the exception of maybe the OS drive, which again is a security/privacy issue. VLC shouldn't be scanning every running/mounted partition by default and instead should give us users exclusion rights.

What's actually happening in the above scenario is that VLC scans/adds all Media files from whatever directory you assign for recording and screenshots in the settings. It's not the whole drive as such. It would be nice to have an 'opt-out' option for this, if possible.

Just updated to the latest version 3.03 (from 2.26) via the client update and immediately noticed a hitherto non-existent problem. Every time I add one of my playlists (containing several folders from different directories spread across my personal drive), VLC goes about calculating the total playtime of the entire playlist with significant CPU usage and a partial hang with only way out being a termination via task manager. Happens every single time - Please see the screenshot below.

Apologies for reviving an old thread. The latest version 3.04 seems to have fixed the issue mentioned above. It no longer tries seeking the total playlist time upon adding a very large playlist (containing several folders from across different directories).

However the issue of tiny font size in the playlist is still to be addressed. Kindly consider giving us an option of enlarging the font size.
