VLC remembers previous directory -> Subtitle problem

Postby Asger » 03 Jun 2018 22:00

For all my videos subtitles are in the same folder as the video.

With the new VLC version (3.0.3) I was first excited about all your improvements, because I am used to VLC being a perfect and hassle-free program. But now it is clear that you have applied a design flaw:

Whenever I open a video and want to add subtitles, VLC automatically looks for subtitles in the last used folder. Which is often a long way from the folder for the video now playing.

I have found out that I can drag and drop my subtitles from the folder I am presently in directly into the window. But I think that "Add subtitle" should by default start in the same folder as the video (as it has been until now), and that it should also be possible to set this in the preferences menu. Which it isn't. I've tried changing autodetection fuzziness to 1, 0 and disabling it entirely, but whatever I do, VLC now insists on opening the last used folder.

This is a terrible design error, and clearly a bad decision made in the process of creating the new version.

Please change it back to "use present video folder as default to look for subtitles" - as it has always been - a.s.a.p.

Cheers

I have the same problem, I'm considering downgrade VLC to a previous version to get the old functionality.

Hi Paop and anyone else it might help:

I did that, downgraded, and it did not resolve the problem at first. I downgraded to 3.0.2.

This made me think it was something in Windows 10 explorer causing the problem.

But I just now downgraded further to 3.0.1 and the problem went away. So I'd call this a design flaw in the last versions.

For getting older and better VLC, go here, and pick the Win32 or Win64 folder and download the exe file which is the installer.

This is fixed for 3.0.4. Please try a nightly build, if you want.

Thank you, Jean-Baptiste, I just tried build 3.0.4-20180623-0544. I upgraded from my previous downgrade to 3.0.2. and the functionality remained as it should:

I went into one folder and used "Add subtitles" to manually point out a subtitle in the same folder.

Then I went into another folder and repeated, and now VLC started by opening the same folder I was working in.

In other words, the solution works for me; VLC now looks in the same folder as the movie again.

Much appreciated. I cannot say if or why this fails for other users.

If you could be troubled for this, please explain about "nightlies". Never heard of them before - is this special VLC code for "betas"? :D

@shafran; it might be interesting if you tried downgrading to 3.0.2 (if you had not already), and then upgrading to the new build. If this solves the problem and upgrading from 3.0.3 does not, then it will at least be highly informative for the developers. In any case, thank you too - for your link which was very helpful for me.

Cheers,

Asger

Nightlies, means nightly build, aka a build every night, when people are sleeping.
