VLC 3.0.3 Crashing after a few minutes

Postby rich06 » 29 Jun 2018 10:57

VLC Version 3.0.3 Vetinari (Intel 64bit)

MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2011)
OS X 10.12.6
Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB

VLC will crash when playing all videos - especially .avi files. First time in VLC crashes after a few minutes play and the sound continues, the video freezes and the Crash Reporter dialog is shown. With all subsequent restarts (even with different .avi files) VLC will play OK for a few minutes again but then it will crash again 'hard' - i.e. player disappears completely with no warning and no video or sound and the C/R dialog is not shown.

Reading these forums I have tried switching off hardware decoding but it had no effect. I am not sure where to look for crash reports or any diagnostics etc -- any ideas anybody?

Many thanks
Rich

Does it crash in the OPenGL output, by any chance?

It will be in the stacktrace window.

Can you clarify - is the 'stacktrace window' to be found in the Apple Mac OS Console?

Same problem. mp4, avi, mkv files all start off 'shaky' (from side to side) then settle down. VLC can unexpectedly quit sometimes at any point; other times after a rewind back, a few seconds, other times when I watched a video and then come back to VLC after a break and attempt to watch another video and VLC will unexpectedly quit. I am running macOS 12.6 on a 2017 iMac. This has been happening too often for me to stay with 3.0.3. I've gone back to VLC 2.2.8 until resolved. Thanks

if you have intel hd 3000, try this build by jean-baptiste:

FYI - like others on this thread I downgraded from v3.xx (I tried earlier v3.xx releases with no joy) to v 2.xx to solve this problem
