Latest VLC version makes sorting by file extension impossible in Windows

Postby ReyKenobi » 11 May 2018 23:30

I use windows 8.1, and I recently updated VLC to the latest 64 bit version 3.0.2. I have configured Windows Explorer to sort my files by "Type" by default, and until the update, files of different extensions were sorted separately because the "Type" descriptor for each was separate. "VLC Media file (MP4)", "VLC Media file (mkv)" and so on [Don't remember the exact names].

But now all file extensions are named "VLC Media File" with no differentiation between the actual file extensions, which means all the video file types are mushed together, mkv, mp4, avi, and so on, and sorted according to name. I want them to be separate as before.

Please help me. I hope I was able to explain good enough. English is not my first language.

Yes,same here. At first i thought it was a win10 update or codec problem that caused it but have found it is definately VLC, please fix to the way it was or at least show us what to do if it requires some setting adjustment...there is no better mediaplayer that comes close to VLC player.

Thanks.

Hmm.. I almost created a new thread with the same issue. Good thing I did search again before submitting.

VLC Player Version: 3.0.3 "Vetinari"
Platform: Windows 7 - Home Premium 64-bit

Question: Can we have file extensions back in the registry keys?
Issue: In the recent version I noticed that the file extensions were no longer shown in the file type column of windows file explorer.
Use-case: Currently the file explorer cannot sort files according file type, because all it can see is "VLC media file." By adding extensions back, the file explorer can sort files correctly.

Before the update:
Columns translated: Name | Modification day | Type | Size

After the update:

I don't remember the earlier VLC version that I had, where the file extensions were visible. I only noticed the issue when I updated VLC player to the recent version.

I haven't tested Windows 10 yet. Are file extensions shown there without registry tweak? Or why were they removed in the first place? Just curious.

Temp registry fix for advanced users:
(Tested only on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit | Save as a text file with ".reg" extension and execute | Please note that I'm not responsible if you manage to destroy your computer somehow with this. PLEASE BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE RUNNING ANY REG-FILES FROM THE INTERNET!)

Code: Select all

This is fixed in 3.0.4. Use a nightly build.

Great! Can't wait for 3.0.4 stable build. (Not really a nightly build kinda person)

v. 2.2.6 seems to work fine if you don't want nightly build
