vlc broken in debian stable

Hi,

I updated my debian stable (8) system last night for the first time in a few weeks, and this broke VLC playback of my MKV files. I can tell the appplication is running because I can hear the audio playing, but nothing appears on the screen. Can someone please recommend how I can progress this: with a bug on the debian bug system?

I assume this is due to this update to the vlc package in debian:

You should post a log (Ctrl+M before starting playback, select level 2) ... don't forget to set it back to 0 after the log is generated.

Thanks for the reply. I will try that, though with the window not appearing at all I am doubtful if I will be able to interact with the GUI to turn on logging. Presumably there is an equivalent command-line option. I will dig it out when I get home and have the time.

I attempted to raise a bug in debian on this. The debian bug website strongly recommended me to use the debian bug reporting tool: 'reportbug'. I ran reportbug. It asked me for some fairly arcane config information (I think a large number of general users would be intimidated by being asked for the details of their smtp server: and assuming that the reporter would be using email on their own machine as a default seems to be catering to a tiny minority of the client base).

Configuration complete, reportbug told me that there was a newer distribution of vlc 'upstream'. It said no bug would be reported. I synced. There was no new version of vlc. I checked the debian package search: from what I can understand, 'reportbug' has decided that because there is a newer version of vlc in testing & unstable, it is not a bug that vlc is broken in debian stable.

I presume that the next version of debian won't be released until next year sometime. This seems a mighty long time to wait for a fix to vlc.

My interaction with debian bug reporting has not been a positive experience.

PS vlc has worked perfectly 'out of the box' in debian stable for me for years, which is a major factor in me settling on it for my home box. This seems to have been far from the case on other linux distributions, notably fedora.

Okay, I was able to find a workaround for this, and also to reproduce the error.

First, I booted up another machine also running debian stable, but with the xfce desktop (not gnome). This runs vlc fine.

Then, I created a new user account on the gnome machine. and vlc opened okay on the new user account. Then I tried applying the customisations to gnome I had on the previous account. The first one I tried - 'use dark theme' - caused vlc to fail. Moreover, when I cleared the 'dark theme' setting (in the tweak tool) - vlc STILL failed to render. So something about the 'dark theme' setting leaves some configuration in such a state that vlc will not render.

As I said earlier, I already attempted to report this using the debian utility 'reportbug', but it said I couldn't do that because there was a newer version of vlc 'upstream'. This seems incorrect to me.

I will attempt to raise the bug manually on debian bugs.

After I set a lower resolution on the new account - vlc stopped rendering. I set the display resolution back to the (max) default - it worked again.

I went back to my original account. If I set the display resolution to the max default then vlc works. Otherwise not.

I have exactly the same problem: since I use a 4k screen (with nvidia proprietary driver like before) I cannot see the vlc window unless I am using the maximum resolution (same error messages) ... can play music though...

(from my bed full hd is more readable...)

If I switch to 4k to launch vlc then switch back to full hd, I can use it...
