5.1 sound from AC3 files with ALSA, OSS or whatever....

Postby alex26 » 09 Dec 2005 02:19

Hi there!
I lately installed Kubuntu Linux and yet I'm stuck with my sound card. I have an Audigy Player from Creative which works great for listening stereo music but when it comes to playback of movies with an AC3 5.1 sound file I still get stereo sound. I'm using ALSA with snd_emu10k1 module.

How do I get 6-channels sound working with VLC? Under Windows I can see "5.1" when clicking on "audio-device". This is unfortuantely completely missing under Linux.

Do you have any ideas?

I was investigating on the topic. Could it be that 5.1 sound is not really supported in VLC? It seems to me like only the SPIF output can be used for sourround sound. True?

Unfortunately this looks to be the way VLC operates. I am trying to get it to work on Mac OS X but it just mixes down to 2 channels. :( Tonight I will get to try it out on an XP PC.
