MTS to MP4 does not work (artefakts)

Postby pascalgame » 27 Apr 2018 13:56

Hi,

I have tried several adjustments, also all adjustments suggested in diverse panels, nothing works. There are always heavy artefakts and interferences in the resulting MP4 video. I also carried out a reset of the program, removal of the entire vlc folder under Roaming (Win 7), and even new installation.

I tried using deinterlace turned on and turned off, and any adjustment associated with interlace that I have seen in instructions and panel discussions. I am out of ideas. But I dont think that this is an uncommon problem. There must be a clear solution to this problem. Does anyone know this solution? I would be really pleased about help and explanation of the solution, please in lay terms, I am just a user.

(BTW, I have another problem with the vlc player, which refers to the cutting of videos and use of the record button. It always records only one second or sound only irrespective of the length I record using the button. But this problem may be disconnected, and I may start a new topic on it.)

You don't need to transcode, just copy the video and audio streams to a new MP4 container ;-)

Thank you for the answer.

Do I understand correctly, I use the stream option from the media menue, select the MTS file, selecting a new folder for the new file, enhancing with mp4, and start streaming? I have done so. The result is a 11 MB large MP4 file (from 35 MB MTS file), and unfortunately, the resulting MP4 video has exactly the same artefacts and interferences as those created by conversion.

An additional note/question: do you mean just to replace the ending MTS by MP4? I just did so, and it worked, it is played as MP4. So, just replace the ending, and I have a fully functional MP4 video? That's all?

No, you use the Convert/Save option, then select an MP4 profile and edit it for ticking Keep Original Track for botha audio and video.
It will just copy the audio and video streams to a new MP4 container, no encoding will be performed so it's fast and lossless.

Thank you for the additional explanation. I understand, and I have done so, just save, not convert.

Unfortunately, the outcome is exactly the same as with conversion, the same particles and interferences.

I used the following adjustments: H.264 + MP3 (MP4), then MP4/MOV (as encapsulation), videocodec H-264, bitrate and quality not used, audiocodec MP3, bitrate 128, channel 1, sample rate 44100. Save to container MP4. Then start. Outcome as mentioned.

What worries me, the new file created by VLN has always 10.8 MB (whether converted or just saved to MP4 container), while I have converted the file to MP4 through an online resource, and this one has 25 MB.

For testing purposes, can you upload your MTS source file to either Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com ? The latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

Ok, thank you for your offer to look at the file in more detail.

This is a test MTS video file: https://www58.zippyshare.com/v/fjNLNWWF/file.html

The resulting MP4 (by saving to MP4 container as per your recommendation) is deposited here: https://www38.zippyshare.com/v/6oGz2KWW/file.html

It's working fine for me with VLC 3.0.2.

Your MP4 file has been made with VLC 2.2.6, please try with v3.0.2.

Many thanks! It works with this version, mp4 can be safely created. However, still two issues:

1. The resulting Mp4 has horizontal stripes now (when there is movement in the video; the stirpes follow the movement somehow). How can these intereferences be removed?
2. The reulting Mp4 is much smaller in size now (6 MB) compared with the original MTS (35 MB), but does not seem to be lower in quality; doesn't matter?

I have solved the problem with stripes in the Mp4, which result from interlace. I have used interlace on and align. This adjustment gave the best result after some trial and error. The resulting mp4 can now be played smoothly. The only issue that worries me is that the mp4 file got almost 3 times larger in size than the MTS (increase from 19 to 56 MB).

However, unfortunately, there is another problem:

When I import this resulting mp4 file into Movie Maker there is no sound. The video runs perfectly, but without sound. I have tried other videos, created by different codecs (also as wmv), nothing works. Always no sound in MM. You may say that this is a problem of MM, but I suppose the problem is associated with VLC player as this problem occurs only after using the new version 3.0.2. Files converted with the old version 2.0.2 run perfectly in MM including sound. Is there any experience or solution to this problem?

Due to their internal structure it is normal that MTS files are larger than MP4 files with the same content.
However three times seems strange if you don't reencode neither the audio nor the video. Are you sure you're not doing it ? Because in your MP4 sample file the audio has been reencoded to MP3.

And your sound issue in Movie Maker seems similar to this report:

Thank you for leading me to the other thread dealing with the same problem of missing sound. However, there is no solution provided to the problem, just confirmation that the problem exists. It seems to be a bug in the new player version 3.0.2.

So, in summary, we can conclude that VLC does not seem to be able to convert MTS to MP4 properly, right? Using the old version of the player provides correct sound, but defective video, using the new version provides correct video, but defective sound.

Is there any solution to this problem? It would be really helpful.

(Re the size problem: the MP4 is 3 times larger than the MTS; I didnt convert, only saved to MP4 container, as per your recommendation. In addition to the two test files uploaded to Zippyshare (i.e. the original MTS and the MP4 created by VLC 2 version), I have now also uploaded the MP4 created by the new VLC 3 version, where the sound is played in VLC player, but not in Movie Maker. It's available here: https://www101.zippyshare.com/v/JjXJkfkf/file.html. Maybe, you could look at this file if you wish to test it again)

Have recognized that the file created by vlc 2 version (that with the interferecnes) has also no sound in movie maker. So, there is an incompatibility. But what adjustment in vlc works for MM? I have tested several adjustments, nothing works. Anybody with an idea? I dont think that this problem is uncommon.

You did convert the audio to MP3 and the video to MPEG4 ASP at a very high bitrate, about 36 Mb/s while the original file is encoded at about 12 Mb/s. Three times bigger indeed

Thanks, but I followed your recommendation, only save to mp4 container, not convert. Strange that it converts despite not used conversion function.

But the persisting problem is why these files dont work in MM. I need to use an online conversion service. It's from .co (columbia?), the files are fine and do work, but I am not sure whether it is reliable. I would rather like to use VLC as I usually do; for MTS it is not manageable, but I dont think that it is impossible, there must be a solution. Any idea?
