VLC pauses and takes a while to start playing again when seeking/rewinding the file

I'm using VLC to listen to lecture recordings, meaning I'm frequently pausing and skipping back and forth as I make notes. A lot of the time it'll either jump to a different time than the one i've selected, or it'll take 10-30 seconds for it to start playing again. I've tried using VLC on my SSD, HDD and also have tried having the file on both and it makes no difference. If I close the file and reopen it instead of waiting then I can skip instantly, but it seems to be more an issue if I pause for a while then try to skip around.

I've also just noticed that while it is playing a recording the end time of the recording was moving up and down. i.e 1:05:18 would go up and down to 19 and 17. First time I've noticed this happening, so not sure if it has been happening before

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com if it's too long.

Also please upload a short sample of a problematic file to either Zippyshare.com (200 MB max) or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts (use the default ones) and then post the link to the file here.

If needed cut it with DGsplit and read here about how to do it:

I can't reproduce the issue, it's working fine for me with VLC 3.0.2.

Try another audio output module:

I left this one running from the start like you asked. I tried restarting playback after leaving it paused and the computer went to sleep, but it failed. I did rewind before selecting play, and I think if I had just hit play it would have been ok. I'll try your suggestions but figured I'd post this in case it helps

Hi, I got similar problems and they were solved by activating and deactivating the "fast seek" option in tool > preference > input/codecs couple of times. So now I use the fast seek as it turned on and I have no artifacts in any format or whatever. It really worth a try.

Hi I'm a Windows 10 64 bit user. This issue has been a persistent PITA since 3.0. The slower you run playback, the worse the lag becomes before the player will begin playing again. After being unable to run the application without the attendant lag that occurs when you "rewind," I reinstalled v 2.8. This fixes the issue, but you are left with an annoying nag telling you to upgrade every time you open the application. Resetting preferences doesn't work and fast seek option didn't do the trick either. So it's back to v 2.8 for me. Thanks!

Issue still occurring. There's also a notable loss of accuracy in the play time of the player. It'll say 9:00/1:30:00 but when you hover over it it'll tell you that 9:00 is actually somewhere else on the bar. I've turned on fast seek and will see if that helps

We are using VLC Media Player to capture a live stream from an IP camera (Ubiquiti Networks Unifi UVC-G3) with H.264 compression. We getting numerous timestamp conversion errors - sometimes back to back. Audio drops of one to seven or so seconds occur at random intervals. We have tried various laptops and the results remain the same. Suggestions on how to alleviate the issue would be most welcome.

This sounds most like my issue but also takes several seconds to start playing at normal speed when stepping forward or back (using VLC button or arrow key on keyboard).
