How to install stable version of VLC on Ubuntu 17.10?

Postby onkeltem » 04 Apr 2018 01:47

Hi!

How to install the latest (3.x ?) version of VLC on Ubuntu 17.10? I can't find any useful information on this topic in the Internet - only some outdated stuff.

The reason I'm not satisfied with packaged 2.2.6 is that it doesn't work properly. I cannot play some files - VLC just hangs, or there is no sound when I try to play Blu-Ray rips. Regarding the last issue this is messages: https://pastebin.com/v8m57Wnx

Thanks for the reply. I tried it, but unfortunately I couldn't open any file using it. Whenever I go to the menu and click "Open file" it says: Unable to create io-slave. Can not create socket for launching io-slave for protocol 'file'.

I seem to be having a similar problem with VLC. I've tried 3 different installs and cannot get VLC to open/play. I've installed Snap, all codecs, installed restricted extras....nothing. I have the current 3.0.1-4, but am unable to get it to work. Could use some GOOD advice. (Ubuntu 17.10 Xfce)

The io-slave issue is fixed starting with 3.0.3-1-3-gf09fd0d, stable channel snap. It was a problem with Qt5/snap apparmor integration, fixed upstream.
