Green flashes with hardware decoding

Postby dstiles » 01 Apr 2018 12:39

VLC 3.0 activates hardware decoding as default. This has caused me to waste several hours and to experiment with several alternatives when two of my video DVDs showed a green flashing screen as the videos played. Earlier versions of VLC worked fine - but hardware decoding was disabled by default.

Why this only happened in some videos and not others I assume was due to a faulty or missing decoder for the videos' format, but no indication was given as to what.

I wasn't really aware of the new release; my OS just updates programs as they become available. I have no problem with the default being set to hardware decoding but please add a menu option (Video Menu?) to allow this to be easily discovered and switched. It took me several hours across more than a week to discover this "fix" and I hope this warning will save others spending this amount of time.

OS: Manjaro linux on hardware less than a year old.

It's in the simple preferences already.
