VLC v3.0 No sound from some movies
So I'v continued to use the "vlc-3.0.0-20170322-0453-git-win64.exe" distribution without error, until I tried playing a movie (.avi file). I checked the audio codec info through VLC on a few movies and I'm having problems with "A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52)" streams. I get no sound from movies incorporating this codec. "MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)" movies have no problems with the sound. Since I still have 2.2.4 Weatherwax installed (32bit), I retested the same movies and have no sound problems at all so this is a v3.0 problem only I guess.

I think the following info may give a further clue as to this issue. I recently hooked up a DAC and couple of Wharfedales using the motherboards s/pdif optical toslink. I was still using v2.2.4 when I poked around the VLC settings and enabled the 'prefer s/pdif when available' setting. Shortly after I lost the sound from movies. At the time I simply reset VLC's defaults (the sound returned) and therefore didn't notice any audio codec differentiation.
If I list the "audio device" through vlc's right-click interface on v2.2.4 I see "Default" and "Realtek (optical)...". The "Default" was always selected, but I still got sound as the s/pdif is now the only active device on the system. If I list the same on VLC v3.0, the "Default" option is gone.

So I'v gone ahead and re-created the no sound problem in v2.2.4 by enabling the "prefer s/pdif when available" setting. After testing a few movies whilst noting the codec info, I can confirm "A52 Audio (aka AC3) (a52)" streams are having problems. "MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)" streams play ok so I'm pretty sure we are dealing with the same issue that is present 'out of the box' in v3.0.

I'm gonna go ahead and offer some final observations here. The s/pdif code path seems catastrophic, in that the DAC (Denon RCD-M40DAB) indicates the complete loss of the "Optical In" signal, and infact switched itself off a few minutes after the "AFTER" post above. This correlates with audio cut-off of any current output streams such as browser based flash content (video continues). If I close then reopen the page containing the flash content, the audio returns and the DAC indicates such.

Not to sound ungrateful for your efforts guys, but this problem is forcing me to keep two vlc versions: The latter build too solve the CPU spike issue that exists in 2.2.4 when listening to mp3's; And the 2.2.4 build that doesn't lose sound as described in this post. I just downloaded and tried the latest nightly and find it actually crashes out now while attempting to play some movies. Correction, I just did a little testing and the crash occurs if there is other media open like flash browser content. After closing down the flash stream and trying to play a movie with the codecs described previous, it plays the video but there is spdif signal cutoff as origionally described. Vlc.exe requested that I send a bug report, so I did.

So I just tried the latest nightly (vlc3.02) and this problem still exists. A few more months and it'll be 2 years since I first reported this. Aside from an mp3 cpu spike issue and an unwieldy Icecast list, 2.2.4 Weatherwax works just fine. It's just as well I guess.

The audio passthrough has changed in 3.0 and still being worked on. We are not ignoring it.
