I had the same problem, and noted that it generally occurred after I'd quite 3.0.1 after massive memory-leaking (which I was able to keep track of by having the MacOS' Activity Monitor utility up and set to watching memory usage). This seems to happen mainly (exclusively?) with 10-bit video, even if the file size is very small. For example, the Star Trek Continues (a fan-series) episodes to play off-line; they're about 350mb file-sizes, but when played in 3.0.1, memory usage would rapid balloon, then the Kernel would also balloon, until both were running about 8gb, and start thrashing the hard-disk as they exceed physical ram and went to virtual memory.
(I had to go back to 2.2.8 for the time being.)
