AVI files only play for ~19 mins before crazy @#$% happens...

Postby LankyLayout » 01 Mar 2018 05:27

So I have been capturing Video8 and miniDV footage for a while now into raw avi format. VLC would play these beautifully before, deinterlaced and all.
With this new 3.0.1 update things get a little weird. My videos only play for about 19mins before this happens with loud white noise audio (see SS attached).
I've tried messing with different codecs and settings but none of my videos ranging from 1-2 hours will play past 19 mins.. its very strange.
Any help would be great.

So in order to see the bug, the video needs to be longer that 19 mins... in raw captured DV avi format it's like 4.6 GB... So here it is. Sorry I couldn't think of another way around it. Also I didn't want to upload my family videos so I just filmed myself playing some Black ops 2 lol. For those dedicated enough to download and test my massive file, thank you. You are a trooper.

Furthermore, I went ahead and tested this file on a different computer to make sure it's not my setup but the same thing happens, so it has to be VLC (or all of my avi files?).
I also tested it with VLC 3.0.1 Win32 and VLC 3.0.0 Win64 giving the same results, video cuts out just before 19 mins. Just a thought but could it be some sort of memory cap that triggers the bug?

VLC 2.2.8 plays these files just fine. Also WMP plays these fine as well.

Here is the sample:

I was just reading through some other topics and then it dawned on me to check for any messages/errors in VLC. Sure enough when the video messes up at around 20 mins I get this error.
[correction: the error does not show up during payback, only when I scrub through the jumbled video after 20 mins. That's when the error comes up.]

"main error: buffer deadlock prevented"

Does anyone know what this means / how to fix it?

There's no issue.

You're storing your data into an AVI file which is 32bit limited.
You break the container max limit when reaching 4GB, which matches 19min at constant rate.
Stop using pre Y2K containers.

Hi, will this issue be fixed? Promise to donate if fixed!
My big avi-files up to 20 Gb or 90 minutes needs conversion. All files perform excellent with Microsoft Film and TV app.
Lite more HD activity with Windows Media Player but works ok.
Thanks for looking into this!
Greetings from Norway
PS:
Got latest version of Windows 10 and VLC 3.0.1

If the AVI files are OpenDML compliant then they can be more than 4 GB large. The only limit is the file system of the OS.
Make sure to create OpenDML compliant AVI files.

AFAIK there's no opendml extended chunk support in vlc, and I've never seen any sample.

Hey Wings, thanks a bunch for looking into this. I finally found the nightly build which has the fix [vlc-4.0.0-20180309-0510] Mar 09 build. The 3.0.2 build still doesn't have the fix. Not a huge deal just letting people know. Thanks again! Will donate as soon as I get a job.....

Also not sure why but these latest nightly builds have the plugins deep in several subfolders so VLC was not starting. Copying them into the main plugins folder seemed to fix the issue.

This thing happens to me too, when moving the seeking slider past 13 or more minutes. Leting it play after that limit also starts playing white noise and also it opens a few new empty black VLC windows.
This happens with large avi files when video is lagarith or DV and audio is PCM wav.
I didn't test other codecs, because files are usually not so large.

nightly builds works fine.
eg: vlc-4.0.0-20180310-0516-dev-win64

Thank you for the fix.
