VLC 3 + Chromecast with subtitles

Postby cyberoptik » 17 Feb 2018 20:42

Is it possible stream a video to Chromecast and enable subtitles? I tried different configurations but with no success.

I'm using VLC 3.0.0 and Chromecast 2.

Thanks in advance!

So far, subtitles are supported only for files which cannot be decoded by the Chromecast device and need to be converted first. For files supported by Chromecast, we can't show subtitles right now. Sounds contradictory, I know.

Hi Felix,

Thanks for your prompt response. At least now I can stop to search for a solution since there is no solution for this version. I hope that you guys can fix this issue in the future versions.

Again, thanks for your availability to answer my question.

Best Regards

I especially created an account to respond on this thread.
VLC should be the 1 in all media player, but it misses a vital functionality, which is not being able to load subtitles via Chromecast.

Why is there no subtitle support, which seems like such a simple function to implement and should be a vital part of VLC functionality.
So far, subtitles are supported only for files which cannot be decoded by the Chromecast device and need to be converted first.
Can you elaborate on the files which can and cannot be decoded? And how to convert them, to what formats etc. This is very unclear to me what you mean.
For files supported by Chromecast, we can't show subtitles right now.
What is the plan for adding this to VLC, should we wait for V4 to release? What are the troubles?

Airflow adds subtitle support with ease.

I'm also following this thread as I think vlc should prioritize this

I have a huge problem with my chromecast, it used to work Before but now it doesen't, I click on rendere or whatever it's called, to be able to stream to the chromecast, but after 1 minute it stops and my chromecast device shows up too early (from when it worked to cast, it took maybe 15 sec. Before when it worked) now it comes up conversion problem.. I have no idea what to do, if someone please could help me it would be very kind because i'm going crazy, i bought a new computer and a new chromecast and it couldn't be anything wrong on those things, if someone wonders why i posted here I'm new to this site and want to ask my question but didn't knew how to.. so if anyone gets upset because of this i hope that no one will get, / Simon

I just got a chromecast and was kind of surprised to see there is no subtitle support when casting. Will this be supported anytime soon?

I have a 2nd generation Chromecast. Up to date firmware.

I also have the latest VLC version.

I love that I can cast to Chromecast now, but subtitles aren't streaming!

Hi,

Adding subtitles seems fairly easy but hide some issues. Chromecast can't receive and display subtitles so VLC has to decode the video, blend these in an efficient way to reencode the video before sending it to the chromecast. It needs some work on the transcoding part but it will eventually get into vlc.

Hello! I created an account just for this. VLC has during the years been the single program that I've always used for videos! Now this subtitle thing with chromecast is really disturbing, have the people behind VLC stopped caring? This is some Windows Media Player-level problems... :(

Hi, this is currently a work in progress. It is a very important feature but a lot of important work has been done too and VLC is a small team. ;)

I too created an account to post this. Please prioritize this. I am Indian and find it hard to follow American accents in movies. Subtitles are vital for my enjoyment.

Is there any other program that i could use that supports subtitles, or is this a problem with chromecast in general?

You can always burn them on the video beforehand in a file, and then play the video. But a realtime version of this need some additional work in VLC. :/

The easiest and also free way is to use Plex to stream to Chromecast, but it requires a web browser to interface with.
If for some reason Google Chrome isn't connecting to your Chromecast, which will happen with Windows 7, use Opera as it will connect straight away.

Make sure your subtitle files are in the same folder as the movie, not in a separate folder.
Plex will take care of the rest.

According to that: https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc- ... issues/502 it's about to be supported in version 3.1. Very good, as it's the most important missing Chromecast option. The 2nd. one is Chromecast volume control.

VLC can't use google cast SDK, everything is made up from scratch so it's a little bit harder to put in place.

Eventually it will be available.
