XBox1 - GUI Behavior while Skipping

Postby kari1999 » 14 Jan 2018 15:03

Hello. I am loving the VLC app for xbox. Thank you VLC creators, it's amazing!

I want to bring to your attention one behavior problem I noticed. And I am posting this as a XBox1 issue just because that's the only device I have for VLC but this issue is probably for all devices and not just XBox1.

So, when I'm watching stuff I often use the right/left triggers to skip forward/back through the video. Usually I skip back to re-read a subtitle or make a quick replay. And usually I skip forward on Sports when there is a timeout or no action. This skipping feature is working perfectly in VLC but comes with a small unwanted behavior issue.

You see, anytime you skip forward or back, the VLC GUI pops up on the screen. The GUI blocks the subtitles and also ruins the instant replays. I use the skip feature on my other video players for other devices and all of them operate with the correct behavior by not bringing up the GUI when skipping and that's how I immediately noticed this on VLC.

So my suggestion is to please don't pop-up the GUI when we skip forward or back. The best way is to just leave the GUI in the current visible state. For example, if the GUI is not visible then don't pop it up when we use the skip. But if the GUI is already visible when I press the skip then you can leave it visible. This is because there could be times when somebody wants to see the GUI while skipping ahead or back. So in that case I could press the "A" button and bring up the GUI and then skip as much as I need and the GUI is staying open because that would be the right behavior.

But if the GUI is not visible and I hit the skip buttons then the GUI should remain not visible. This is the right behavior. For example, my DVR works like this and so does my other players like my Blu-ray and DVD.

The worst part is when I need to skip back to re-read the subtitles, because the GUI pops up and blocks the subtitles. And also with doing instant replays, half the screen is blocked by the GUI and the effect is enjoyed less because of it.

So basically my suggestion is that skipping should not alter the state of the GUI. If the GUI is visible when the user skips then leave it visible and if the GUI is not visible when the user skips then leave it not visible. That way the right behavior of what the user expects will happen correctly every time.

If you can please fix the behavior that would be so great. Thank you so much for making this awesome app either way. :D :D :D :D

Hi kari1999,

You're right, thank you for the suggestion. I'll try to get to it ASAP (but not in the coming release).

@kari1999
First I have to agree, this would be an improvement, @mfkl mabybe make it an option so the user can choose how that part of the GUI should behave.
Second, untill mfkl has the time to work on this, you can use the Y button to play and pause. What I do is jump back to the point I want to rewatch pause with Y press B for the GUI to disappear and then Y again. Works like a charm, but a bit complicated.

IronGibbet - Thanks, yeah it would be a great improvement and it's driving me crazy the past 4 months. I tried your suggestion with the Y button and then press B and sometimes it exits me out of the video and I have to open it back again. So frustrating LOL.

mfkl - Is there any timeline for this? Thank you either way for your consideration. :)

Hi mfkl, quick question: Sometime after you posted the message quoted above, my VLC app did update to version 3.03.70 but I never saw any difference.

So the menu/GUI still pops up anytime I skip back/forward with the left/right triggers/bumpers. No difference at all on my end. It's the same as I described in my original post.

So my question, was it supposed to be in 3.0.3 as in "3.03.70"? Because mine shows 3.03.70 and I'm not sure if that's the reason. Thanks a bunch. :D :D

Are you using LT/RT buttons after the GUI is hidden? If it's still there it will keep it there.

Also there were other, possibly related, event handling bugs that I fixed in the past few weeks. Expect a 3.1 release soon.

Hi mfkl. Yep, definitely using the LT/RT after the GUI is closed. I even tried closing the GUI manually with the B button and then trying LT/RT. Also tried after the GUI auto-closes itself by timing out (without the B button). But no matter what, the GUI always pops up when hitting the LT/RT buttons. It's the same as it always was since the beginning of this thread. No difference on my end at all.

Cool, I'll look forward to the 3.1 release and I'll post back here if it solves the issue. Thanks! :D

yes, also looking forward to the 3.1 version...strangely, I can´t select settings in the current version (right bottom corner), seems like Xbox controller stops responding when trying to move within the 3 options. I even reinstalled the VLC app, it didn´t help.

Confirmed, all is working perfectly now in the version 3.1 update. :D

Finally, I can watch in PEACE :D :D :D

Thanks for this HUGE improvement!
