I would like to join the "same here..." discussion. I have a SONY Bravia XBR55x850d running Android. I am trying to connect the same way but I am getting nowhere. I can connect with the Synology Video App to my DS916+ no problem. Really appreciate it if anyone can add a positive progress report. Thanks a lot.

Perhaps you have to type the full user name:

domain\username
password

e.g.
MYDOM\user1
mypasswd
or
WORKGROUP\user1
mypasswd

Additionally:
On windows systems (acting as server for your VLC using devices) with disabled password protection you have to add user "EVERYONE" to permissions of the shared folder.
Of course you have to add the same permissions to the share itself, too.

windows clients wich are configured as domain members (e.g. company notebooks):
They have two types of working credentials:
- the (cached only) domain credentials, wich was used on that client at least once sucsessfully (but cached for a limited period of time [some weeks?]).
- windows client credentials (e.g. local "Administrator" ["PCNAME\Administrator", not "MYDOM\Administrator"])

For the sencond you have to use
PCNAME\user1
mypasswd
( instead of
MYDOM\user1
mypasswd )

Furthermore:
Be aware of what the setup of a HomeGroup do with permissions in the background!

(I don't know how accurate NAS systems imitate SMB techniques.)

I was going to open a new thread but I found this one which is about the issue I am having right now: I have a Sony bravia KD65A1 tv with vlc app already installed. the tv is connected via ethernet to my local network. I can access to the content of my laptop (O.S. win 8.1) without problems after I enter the credentials of the user of that laptop, but strangely enough when I select my desktop pc (O.S. win10) from vlc the window asking me the credentials of that computer does not appear at all!! why is that?
update: I also tried to access from vlc to the laptop of my wife who also has windows 10, and I can do that. it seems that the only difference is that my laptop and my wife's laptop have SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support on under windows features while I only have Direct SMB (which should be SMB 3.0). could be that the problem?

Has this issue of not being able to provide credentials to access a shared folder via the VLC app on a Sony TV ever been resolved? I see that the last post in this thread was submitted about a year ago. Any fix since then? I also am unable to provide credentials to authenticate when using the VLC app on my Sony UHD TV. (Feb. 2019) Any fixes available yet? Nothing works. The app keeps asking me to provide credentials over and over. The "user name" and P/W works fine on my iphone. Access to shared folders on my PC via VLC on my iphone works fine with no issues. But not via the VLC app installed on my Sony TV. Any further suggestions to fix this issue at this late date?

Hi
I just installed VLC for Android on my new Sony Bravia KD-65A1. The idea was to provide a 'Netfix-style' browser, and video player for my ever-growing NAS Blu-ray & DVD collection..
Not at all easy!
I also couldn't get past the SMB share issue until ES-File Explorer app was installed.
Even with ES-File Explorer a bizarre fault/feature of the TV remote means that it is impossible to choose 'OK' instead of 'Cancel' after entering LAN Movie directory!
So... yet another app! On my iPad this time, making it a TV remote, just so that I can enter these details!
Finally I can see my video files. But only as filenames, no pictures of the Movie Box.
I will have to try and sort this out.
It will be interesting to test various H.265 encodings in an m4v container.
My Nvidia RTX280 card supports very high quality H.265 encoding in a reasonable time, so I'm curious if they will all play back.

I had the exact same issue originally when I first tried to authenticate to a SMB share on my synology NAS, tried many syntax combinations and none seemed to work. Tried from VLC on my phone running Android v9 and didn't seem to work either. Not sure if anything actually changed but after many tries this past week was finally able to authenticate and now I've been able to add various SMB shares as favorite sin VLC and connectivity works perfectly. For what it's worth the syntax that ended up working was just using the username only in the username field + password. My NAS has a pretty standard standalone setup it is not domain joined or anything like that.

Same issue here, VLC version 3.1.1
VLC app is able to connect to my PC using SMB but fails on my Synology NAS.
tested on my phone (Samsung S9) and on my TV (Sony AF8) with identical results
SMB compatible file managers (MiXPlorer with SMB2 addon) connect fine in both cases

**EDIT**

Fixed
My NAS SMB Service configuration was:

Replaced by:

And it works now

I also have this problem... Synology with SMB2/3 enabled and all other devices will log in, VLC 3.1.2 Android on Pie 9.0 does not, ever.
Debug verbose log in the the Droid does not reveal anything..

I have a Google Pixel running Android 9 and I am using VLC 3.1.4.

I try to connect to a shared folder on my Windows 10 PC and encounter the same problem where the credentials are not accepted and I cannot access the folder through VLC. I also have a hard drive connected to my router and shared but I cannot access that through VLC for the same reason.

I have another Android app on this Google Pixel that is a file manager app and it can access all the shares just fine.

Has there been any progess on resolving this issue with VLC?

This problem presists over 9 months, and cannot be resolved.
I use K.O.D.I. now.

So Windows 10 works, but not Windows Server?

What about Windows 7?

I cannot connect to Windows 10 shares, using SMB2, from my iPhone. If I turn SMB1 back on, it works. When can you fix VLC to work with SMB2? It looks like several people have been telling you about this problem for months.
