I've spent like 3 hours on this today. I've tried every combination of fixes, but I'm still not able to play youtube videos on VLC. I'm using the latest youtube.lua you are kindly providing to us.

This is the latest error log:

If you're using VLC 2.1.5 64 bits, there is another issue (https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/11897). It has been solved in 2.2.0. So the solutions are using the 2.1.5 32 bits, or 2.2.0 nightly (nightlies.videolan.org).

I have now tried with 64bit 2.2 nightly, and 3.0 nightly AND 32bit stable release.

I got a different error message.

lua info: Found 82-character scrambled signature for youtube video URL, attempting to descramble...

This is also with the youtube.lua from http://jslover.secsrv.net/VLC/playlist/youtube.lua

I've also tried the .lua you linked above.

Is there an updated one I should use ?

I have now tried with 64bit 2.2 nightky, and 3.0 nightly

First, I want to clarify what I said. When I wrote 2.2 nightly, I meant the last nightly and indeed it's 3.0. Sorry about that.

I do not really know what to say. The youtube.luac that goes with the nightly version should work, so try to delete youtube.lua and use a proper nightly install.

If this does not work, the broken link you are using could be helpful.

I have just tried with the latest build, and there is no problem for me.

Not sure that no update is needed, but the script has not been modified since February, and the people who care of that are rather reactive.
Can you detail what does not work (the link of the video, what happens precisely) ?

...the GIT version hasn't been modified since February & my version hasn't been updated in a while cuz I haven't noticed a problem (it works for me). I may not play a YouTube video every day, but if YouTube stops working in VLC, I should notice semi-quickly.

Can you confirm if that video works in 2.1.5 & 2.2.0 & doesn't work in 3.0.0?...can you provide a debug log of it working (in 2.1.5 or 2.2.0) & one of it not working in 3.0.0?...I may not need a debug log, since I'll probably just need to test it myself, but maybe it could help?

...I'm sorry, but what? What is "raw mode down"? Are you trying to PLAY YouTube videos or DOWNLOAD them? What are the exact steps you were using 2 days ago, that was working? Are you even talking about my version of YouTube.lua?

About Convert/Save... is a download not possible, not with Raw, not with transcoding.

...I don't think "Media ► Convert / Save... (Ctrl+R)" is a good choice for this either.

A download is only possible with Stream ... but not with the Raw-mode.

...using "Media ► Stream... (Ctrl+S)" is not for downloading or playing a YouTube video...it's for making VLC start streaming to somewhere else.


I'm just gonna assume you wanna download YouTube videos & you wanna do that without changing (transcoding) them...


To Download YouTube Videos in VLC...

• Copy the URL for a YouTube video, for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXd2WxoOP5g
• Open VLC, press Ctrl+V to paste the URL, then press Enter or click Play
• Wait about 3-5 secs after it starts playing, to ensure it's playing properly
• Open or Focus VLC's Playlist window
  
  • To open/close it...
    
    • In VLC, press Ctrl+L
    ...or...
    
    • Click View ► Playlist
• Right-click the bold/currently playing item, click Save...
• Under Settings, click Dump raw input
• Under Destination, for Destination file, click Browse
• Choose where to save the file (set the folder where you can find it later!)
• Type a filename (type .mp4 for the extension)
• Click Save
• Click Start
• Wait for a new playlist item, called Streaming (in VLC 2.1.5 anyway), to become bold & stop being bold (it might be pretty quick), this is when VLC is downloading/saving the file
• Once VLC is done saving the file, Delete that new playlist item (called Streaming)...cuz if you accidently re-play that item, it will re-save the file again
  
  • To do that...
    
    • Click the playlist item, then press Delete (on the keyboard)

...now it's saved, go find where you saved it & double click it to Play it in VLC.

Hello, im running vlc 2.1.5 (clean install) w7 x64 and your latest "youtube.lua", I've placed it on the right folder, tried deleting the "youtube.luac" file, tried different versions of vlc "vlc-3.0.0-git-20150524-0002" and "vlc-3.0.0-git-20150524-0403-win64" both portable.
And still cant play any youtube video

Having trouble using random and a playlist of youtube videos. It seems to try loading them for too short a period of time before moving on to the next file. It will do this until a video randomly loads fast enough so that it doesn't move on.

This does not happen if random is disabled.

I'm using this script but with youtube moving to DASH, there is some kind of formats like 60fps or 4K that they aren't available in HLS so this script can't use it.

As youtube is doing some signature checking generated by JS when you ask for the MPD, I'm using youtube-dl to solve this problem and I did a simple script for parse youtube-dl dumped MPD. After this, I tried pass the MPD url to vlc but seems that adaptive isn't working because gives me the lowest quality, so I tried use the input-slave option of vlc and works in some cases but it's enough for me
