VLC 3 - Hold up?

Postby opethdisciple » 16 Aug 2017 12:08

VLC 3 seems to have been in development forever! I keep an eye on the roadmap but do we think we will finally see a release soon?

You guys do seem to go quite slowly. It was like almost a year from 2.2.4 to get to 2.2.6 (I think)

The group of people working on this is really small for a project this size. VLC 3.0 has seen a few fundamental changes to the internal workings of VLC, which costs a lot of time and testing and debugging. VLC has also been ported to many platforms these days, which slows it down even further. And some of those platforms are still behind on the desktop version.
If you check what the devs are doing these days you will see they are by no means moving slow! It is just too much work with too few volunteers, and we wont release a version which isn't ready.

You still can get DAILY UNSTABLE 3.0 from nightlies.videolan.org
:!: If you want your problem to be solved :
* First read troubleshooting guide VSG:Main
* Always provide verbose LOGS ! (command line or from gui)
* Always check your issue against a developer build from Nightly Build of VLC
* Tell us when your problem is solved !

My suggestion would be to try and follow more of a Google Chrome cadence where they have broken it down in to 6 week release cycles.

Even Mozilla adopted this for Firefox as it just made sense. One major update a year was just too long time to wait, and now they push out smaller updates in smaller release cycles.

Same thing for VLC. Honestly, it was about a year between versions 2.2.4 and then 2.2.5/6. :!:

I imagine VLC is not a dying project and has a big team of active developers, so maybe it's time to embrace modern software development release cycles?

Only speaking out of love for the project.

Lets put some fire back in to this project.

That is the aim for the next cycle, but you have to realize we do not have the same firepower as Mozilla or Google :)

I'm keeping an eager eye on the development of VLC 3. But at the moment I see the % completion of the project going backwards on the roadmap page.

:(

I do Not believe VLC 3.0 should be released until the Bugs and Omissions
and lost features I have described are fixed.
I would rather the developers take their time and do a complete job.

Also, the VLC developers should post a detailed scenario of how to build the software
in the Windows 7 64 environment so that others might be able to participate.

Most of what I see at that URL is a list of Bugs to be fixed, not
a list of Feature goals to be achieved.
Maybe a candidate for 2.5.0 assignation,
not a whole cardinal jump to 3.0.0 .
Save the 3.0.0 for a release that includes the transitional feature additions.

I see the VLC 3 roadmap has disappeared and in it's place is the remaining bugs now moved to 3.0.1.

Does that mean a 3 release is imminent?

Because many tech news sites are saying that VLC 3 is released and can be downloaded from there. Our infrastructure can't handle the load, plus it's not released as of now. Hold on for a few extra hours :)

So I found this page https://www.videolan.org/vlc/releases/3.0.0.html

Two questions, where is the x64 executable for Windows?

And two, why is this not on the main landing page?

https://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html

I downloaded a 4.0.0 Otto version.
How does that fit into the development sequence ?
