Can control buttons for skip forwad in video v. skip to new video be separated?

Postby Anonymoose » 18 Nov 2017 19:41

Is there some way to get separate control buttons to skip forward a few seconds within the currently viewed video vs. skip forward to the next video? Right now the same button in the default skin controls both, and that makes controlling it difficult. Easy to skip to next video by just tapping it (although irritating that it doesn't go to the next file in the current folder!)... but hard to just skip forward a few seconds because holding it down to active tends to skip more than I'd like.

This is currently not doable, but you can use the arrows.

These buttons already exist, but you cannot click and hold them, only click them. They are called step backwards and step forwards. You can add them to your toolbar by customizing the toolbar (tools -> customize interface...)

I see where you are coming from Anonymous. I have given it some thought and written a ticket 19104 to reconsider how the interface works. Maybe some day we will get around to changing this behavior, if it is decided to be a good idea.

I think most of us use the time toolbar/element or the hotkeys to jump backwards or forwards.

@Jean-Babtiste Kempf - the arrows are what I was referring to as buttons. Click and it takes you to next/previous in playlist. Click and hold, and it skips forward/back in the current video. Only you can't really control the skip forward/back.

@EodiV - thanks!! Being able to skip back/forward in a very controlled way (without having to remember the right hotkeys!) can be VERY useful - particularly when you missed a word in a video and want to hear that bit again to see if you can catch it, or if you're trying to find a certain spot in the video where you want to either take a screen shot or start the video playing again, etc. Having a button to let you just skip a set number of seconds is WAY faster than going frame by frame (even tho after the skip you may still need a few frame by frames to find the single frame you want) - and way more controlled and therefore less time wasting than trying to use the time slider. I VERY much hope you folks will separate up the control function arrows so that the skip is separate from the function to go to next/back video file!

Oh, and on that note - it would be nice also if your screen shot function captured the screen at it's maximum resolution of that frame in the video (or let us set the resolution/size we'd like or gives a few options like 'highest/medium/low quality" something like that). That said, your screen shot function is still quite a bit better than several other players! GOM captures them in significantly higher resolution for the identical video/frame (key if we're needing to use the capture in a website, for example, and want the most sharp image possible) - BUT they've got a bizarre thing where it doesn't actually capture the frame you're on but skips a few frames forward (e.g., worthless!). A few others are lower resolution than VLC.

Regardless, thanks for the very nice player!

No need to thank me, others made this possible before I was even around.

Just to make sure you realise, the step forward and step backwards buttons are already available to you right now, you just need to customise the interface under tools -> customize interface. So what you need is alrready there. The ticket I wrote is meant to reduce cunfusion further, but in your case you won't have to wait for that.
