El Cap 10.11.6, VLC 2.2.6, won't connect to Syno NAS

Postby RootlessAgrarian » 10 Nov 2017 05:36

Hi all...

I have never been able to get OSX VLC to stream any content from my Synology NAS (Syno DSM 4.3). I was hoping that the latest version 2.2.6 might finally fix this problem.

I was briefly thrilled to see "NAS" actually appear in the listbox when "UPnP" was selected at left. This was new and exciting, and looked quite promising! However, I also see the dreaded Yellow Caution Triangle to left of the NAS entry ... the triangle which btw *still* has no tooltip popup to explain what it means -- gee, isn't it about 4 years now since people started requesting this tooltip? ... and I can't do anything with the "NAS" line in the list box. It doesn't respond to dbl click; I clicked up the item menu & tried "Expand Node" but nothing happens (even if I wait more than 2 minutes).

When I waited several minutes, VLC crashed :-)

Code: Select all

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS) Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x000070000029fff8 Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY
That's ugly.

Every other player app I own -- Android, iPad, the works -- sees the NAS with no trouble at all. I can stream audio and video successfully with every player app except VLC on desktop OSX. VLC on Android f'rexample streams video correctly from the NAS, but OSX VLC does not. Please, can someone fix this? It's been multiple years now that I've been unable to get at my media library using VLC on OSX desktop machines. Is there some secret to getting this working? Do I have to upgrade to Sierra? Is there some reason why it is so very difficult to get OSX VLC to work as a UPnP client?
