Buffering when playing .ts file that's being written to

Postby amccarter » 13 Oct 2017 22:59

My TV tuner card records to .ts files. Sometimes, I want to start watching it before it's done recording, so I just double-click the file and open it up in VLC. It starts playing just fine, but then every 15 seconds or so, the progress bar turns yellow (default skin) and goes 0-100%, like it's buffering. And indeed, when it does this, the video freezes. it's almost like it's detected that the file got appended to, and it updating the total runtime of the video.

Is there a way to prevent this from happening and just play the .ts file until it hits EOF? I don't even care if the progress bar is incorrect. I swear this used to work for an older version of VLC, but I might be misremembering that.

allow more delay for buffering before starting playback

I started watching a recording a full hour after it had started, and it still acted the same way.
