How does VLC read files?

Hi I want to know how VLC reads audio files stored on a hard disk

I am asking this because whenever I'm listening to a mp3 file a message pops up saying that I am running out of room on my disk drives

I currently have VLC paused & the message isn't showing up which indicates it has something to do with the way VLC reads files

This is just a minor inconvience but I still want to know why this is happening!

Can someone please help me?
