iTunes to VLC ... please

Yes, I like old-fashioned. Yes, I like not being told how to play my music. No, I do not like all my playlists being removed (in iTunes). So, I am going for open-source (which I like better anyway).

But, I am tired after painting the outside of my house (I'm old!), and reorganizing my garage, and programming necessary applications for a non-profit org of which I am a member. So, please set me in the right direction. I need to convert iTunes music to a format that VLC can play. I need to remake my playlist (I have the folders and files in Windows Explorer), and I need to know what information in iTunes that VLC will not be able to handle (album, composer, artist, song title, harvesting info for songs on the Internet, etc.).

Hope this is not too much to ask. A direction to somewhere to read and learn will do.
