File list not showing when connecting to Universal Media Server

When using the VLC for iOS app, file listings will not show when connected to Universal Media Server via UPnP.

UMS shows the renderer on the Status panel:



When I open VLC for iOS in both my iPad and iPhone, I can select the Universal Media Player under Universal Plug'n'Play (UPnP) in Local Network but my file listing does not show:



I'm having this same issue on both my iPhone and iPad. When I use VLC for Android, I can see the files listed just fine. When I use VLC for OSX or Windows, I can still connect to UMS and see the files listed just fine. So I'm thinking something about VLC for iOS will not show the file listing when connected to Universal Media Server. Does anyone know why, or if there is a fix?

Version details:
Server: Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise
Universal Media Server: v6.4.0

VLC for iOS: 2.7.8 (on both iOS devices)
iPad iOS: 9.3.3
iPhone iOS: 9.3.2

Can anyone please confirm that VLC for iOS does work when using Universal Media Server?

I am still experiencing this exact same issue on VLC for iOS on my iPhone 6 and iPad.

After I posted my issue, I simply switched to Android VLC to use with Universal Media Server. Unfortunately, my Android tablet died, and now I am back on my iPad. The issue I posted above is still happening, exactly as I described above on both my IPad and iPhone. I really hoped a VLC update since then would have fixed this issue. Is there anything I can try that would fix this?

I have a similar issue, I have VLC on my iPhone 8. If I use the UPNP Western Digital My Cloud, I am seeing four and a half seasons of a show. If however I connect through the file server option, all of the shows appear. I note that it works fine on another media server so it may be tied to the Western Digital My Cloud. I see no difference in the meta tags between the files which appear and those which do not. I don’t see many settings in the iOS version of VLC.

Same here - I have the latest UMS server running on a separate PC on the same wifi network and my IOS devices.

Downloaded the latest version of VLC from iTunes app store

Most of the time the folders/files do not list on any of my IOS devices (iPhone, iPad). Some times they do eventually show, but it's rare and very unreliable

The UMS server shows fine on the smart TV

I have to do a wifi upload with takes memory and defeats the purpose of the media server.

I tried it again after the latest IOS update, and still doesn't list the folders / files on UMS

This bug is too small and not easily reproduced. No one on the VLC iOS team cares. I’ve since moved on to PlayerXtreme. It lists files from upnp media shares just fine.

I have the same problem

Multiple ios devices (iphones and ipads), none of them work

VLC 3.0.2 for IOS
UMS 7.0.1
Tested on diffrent linux distros (ubuntu and gentoo)

Hi, I am the lead developer of UMS and I can confirm this bug. I am not sure if it's a problem with UMS or VLC, but I am not aware of any other apps that experience this problem when interacting with UMS.

The one piece of maybe-useful information I have is that it seems to never happen if you wait a long time (like 1 minute) before trying to browse.

I have used Wireshark to try to see differences between successful and failing responses but I can't see any difference in the way UMS is sending or responding over the network.

I will be very happy to provide assistance with this problem that affects both of our products.

This has been here for over 2 years and it's still happening. Did the team have any feedback? If it's an error on the UMS end, any information would be useful
