XDCAM MXF files do not play

I'm on the latest version of VLC. OSX El Capitan.

We have some cameras that shoot directly to Sony XDCAM. When I bring in the MXF files, I used to be able to view them in VLC. Now, when I add them to the VLC playlist, they show the correct duration but when I hit play, they open for a split second, show the first frame, then immediately close. I can view the files with no issues on my NLE. Any idea why VLC reports the correct file duration, can see the first frame but immediately closes upon playback?
