Record button does not generate or save a file.

Postby tinacart » 27 Jan 2016 01:46

While playing a video, I have tried recording a portion of it by pressing the red record button. I wait a few seconds and then click it again to deactivate. According to everything I've read, VLC should generate a file and save it to my videos directory. However, there is no file generated. I've searched the computer, there is nothing.

I am using Windows 10. Is the latest version of VLC not compatible with Windows 10? Am I doing something wrong? It captures and saves screenshot images fine.

Are you sure you're looking in the right folder for the file ? In the latest version of the VLC player, it should be in folder MyVideos>RealTimes>RealDownloader. Or do a search in Win Explorer, using "vlc-record" which is what all saved files start with.

Thanks for the reply. I did a search and could not find any files containing "vlc-record." I have the latest version of VLC (2.2.1) and there is no MyVideos > RealTimes > RealDownloader.

I had the same exact issue when I had VLC 2.1.0. I just got here from Googling the issue. When I upgraded to 2.2.4, it is not working. No idea where the file was going before if anywhere - not in My Videos, not in the VLC program folder, and not in the specified folder.

This worked for me - https://wiki.videolan.org/VLC_HowTo/Set_the_recording_folder/

VLC can't create the file until you tell it what folder to dump it into. The default is AVI. I don't see a way to change this yet, but I'm still looking at the settings.

Once you've configured the output folder as per douglandmesser link you may also discover a delay where once you've finished recording and pressed record for the last time, it takes a good 10 mins or so until it flushes all the bytes into the file (depending of course on the length of your recording). Just test with a quick 5 second recording and you should be confident that further recording will be a success.

Hello, brand new here, found the forum thru the help channels.

Have been a user of VLC player for years and have used the record function many times. I'm familiar with how to find/change the save destination but the last several times I have attempted to use the record function, the video comes out snowy/pixelated and with no audio. Is this a known issue others have experienced? Any tips or resolution? Thank you!
