Video transitions

Hi everyone! Probably a very basic question but i'll provide a little about the scenario first. I'm in a band and we're using VLC to play some videos on a screen behind us. The problem is that the songs tend to vary in length since we're not playing with a click track. The videos aren't synced with the music in any way, just standard background videos. So, is there a way to crossfade between 2 videos? Kind of like a slideshow transition. Or possibly between a video and an image? If this isn't possible, does anyone have any recommendations to work around this? Thanks a lot!
