VLC TvOS frames dropping

Postby umzyi » 24 Jan 2017 00:27

Hi

When I play movies on Apple TV 4 using VLC and enable motion processing on Samsung TV, I start seeing frames skipping/dropping. But when I turn motion processing off on TV, the stuttering goes away. My movies have either 24 or 23.976 frames per second. Apple TV is currently set at 1080p/60hz.

Here is what I have tried:
1. I have plugged my old Western Digital Media player and played same movies with (motion processing on), There is no stuttering or frames skipping.
2. I have played movies using Samsung KS8000's built-in player (motion processing on) and found no stuttering.
3. I played the same files using apple TV 4 using VLC Player. I straightaway notices frames skipping while the motion processing is on.

Here is the trick. I downloaded MRMC (kodi) and enabled the option to "Adjust display refresh rate to match video". Guess what!! No stuttering, no juddering, no frames dropping with and without motion processing.
This confused me even further. I kept sending messages to Apple asking them to support 1080/24p playback but then found MRMC (kodi) to handle every thing so smoothly and nicely that I cant figure out what is wrong with VLC?

Is it something to do with Apple TV no supporting 24p? Is it Apple TV hardware? Is it something wrong with VLC Player? But then Plex and MrMC(kodi) are playing absolutely fine. How come VLC has a problem?

Thanks

Sorry, I have no idea how Motion Processing is implemented and how kodi is possibly capable of detecting the frame of the screen. Regrettably, I don't see anyone of us investigating this any time soon.

VLC technically refreshes the screen every time there is a new frame, so running a TV at a multiple of 24 would be suitable. However, there is rarely a real life implication if you play video at a frame rate not matching your screen.

I get your point. But every 4K tv has motion processing put on it and turned on by default. I agree that you dont support third party plugins/softwares. What I am trying to figure out it that playing same files through kodi, or plex or Mrmc with Sync Playback to Display option checked makes the frame skipping go away. But the same video played through vlc or infuse shows stuttering.

Although i am not expert on this, but my gut feeling is that it is either due to 24p limitation on Apple tv or plex/MrMC are using a different rendering engine. I could be wrong :) There is big thread on infuse forums about this issue and the developers are aware of it and telling the users to contact apple about this. Here:
Mrmc and kodi do stutter due to lack of 24,25,30p support but turning the option "Sync Playback to Display" makes it goes away. The files I am playing are h264 with mkv and ac3 with a bitrate of between 2-3k. If you wish to take a look into it, I am happy to supply you samples or a recording of stuttering.

Cheers,
