Problem with saving large streaming videos

Hello everyone,
I have a little problem with saving larger streaming videos (via VLC Media Player).
If I try to save a larger video, it will not save all of it. It will save only a part of the video and it is never larger than 1,7 GB.
Is there any kind of size restriction or does it have something to do with settings of the programm?
I tried to find the asnwer on the internet in various forums and discussions and web sites - but in vain…
Could you please tell where the problem is?
