Putting "92.240.234.122 api.opensubtitles.org" in the hosts (\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts) file did it for me.
Although I suppose it won't use opensubtitles.org to search for subtitles then.

Don't forget to remove it in the future.

Tried the fixed LUA script as well (Removed that line from hosts of course), it works. So, 2 solutions here.

This is among the first google results for this issue.
There is an official release here that solves the problem (version 0.10.2): https://github.com/exebetche/vlsub
Just click on Clone or Download (upper right corner). Sorry for the necro, I think it is relevant, it took me quite a long time to sort it out!
