I need help my video player plays in split screens and the color is distorted. I am running OSX 10.2.8

I have exactly the same problem...everythings purple and in duplicate...and it's not my eyes. I am using 10.2.8 on an IMac with a Sony DRX-810UL-T DVD drive. Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem with VLC 0.8.4 on my G4 running OSX 10.2.8 and the Apple 17" Studio Display. Whether I play a VOB file from a DVD or an .avi, .mpg, or .asf file from the hard drive, the video image splits into two halves and the color is very magenta saturated. The older version of VLC 0.8.1 still works fine on the same machine, though.

VLC 0.8.4 runs okay on another G4 (OSX 10.2.

I have and an eMac (OSX 10.3.9) both of which have CRT monitors.

I'm wondering if it has something to do with the Studio Display LCD monitor. Can anyone help us out?

Okay, I should have read more of the forums before sending my previous post, cause I found the fix for my machine.
Here it is...
Open VLC then under VLC preferences click advanced (bottom left of preferences window) then click on video, then output module and select the Quartz video option. Everything's back to normal!

Thanks. That worked for me...although the playback is a little jumpy. I'll have to trawl through the forum to look for the solution before I do anymore posting.

I am running the newest version with OSX 2.8, have tried the old version and it doesn't work either! The quartz option doesn't appear in my output modules menu so i have drawn a blank...

Somebody please help, i want to watch family guy!

i had the same problem so i did the quartz thing but its really jumpy so jumpy infact that i cant watch it

Well, the problem is that there seems to be a bug in the OpenGL-version shipped within 10.2.8. That's why you get that split screen. Since both we (the VideoLAN team) and Apple have stopped the support for 10.2.x (VLC 0.8.4 is the last release for this version of OSX), I don't see a chance whether this could be fixed, except a 3rd party developer volunteers to do so.
The Quartz-video-output-module does not use OpenGL, but Quartz obviously (thus the usual OSX-rendering engine). The back side of this module is that it can't take advantage of your graphic card's GPU, so all rendering takes places on your normal CPU. That's why your videos are stuttering.
I fear, that the only ways to fix that are either buying a new Mac or buying 10.3 or even 10.4 (10.3 is quite cheap on eBay these days btw.).

@ NEWUSER: no, the OpenGL-output should work flawlessly on 10.3. Could you try to delete VLC's preferences by using the script on its disk-image and try again?
If this doesn't help, update to 10.3.9 please.

I did try to trash the prefs first, without succes...Then I visited this forum and found out about this issue.
I just tried again by using the script, as you suggested, but it still doesn't work.
I confirm that I am on 10.3.4.
Are you certain that it will definetely make a difference to upgrade to 10.3.9??

Yes, for multiple reasons:
1) You should always use the latest version of Mac OS X because of fixed security problems, enhanced speed and better software compatiblity (in general)
2) Each of the updates to 10.3.5, 10.3.6 and 10.3.7 shipped with updates for OpenGL. One of these will be the right one. Anyway, I recommend you to update to 10.3.9 for the reasons mentioned above. You can download a combined updater including all previous updates here.

About systematically upgarding: I would just like to point out that, although it seems a valuable point, Apple have proved in the past that some of their "updates" were introducing new bugs on certain application... However, this is obviously not the point of our discusion here.
