VLC starts but no window. However, I can hear audio playing and it's running in my process list. If I start it from the command line:

I had to downgrade to 3.0.0-0.1 to get it to work again.

Downgrade with:
$ sudo dnf downgrade vlc vlc-core --allowerasing

I have the same problem with Korora 24. Temporary workaround by downgrading to vlc x86_64 3.0.0-0.1.fc24.

We are hoping to find what things the computers have in common which are seeing this problem. Not everyone has a problem with version vlc-3.0.0-0.8.fc24.x86_64. People with this problem need to post their video information to see if it is tied to a certain hardware. For example on my system:

I just did a fresh install of fedora 25 and an having the same problem. The interface for vlc seems stretched out, with oversized text, menus, and icons, within the application. I'm getting a mix one of two issues. (1) The audio will start playing with the vlc window being invisible; the only way i can stop the program is to force kill the process. (2) The vlc window stays visible. However, any video i start plays in the lower left quadrant of the window, with the other three quadrants displaying a black background. This is on a dell xps 13, using the laptop monitor.

I'm having this same problem (the originally posted problem), for the Fedora 25 I just clean installed. Following from the different problems for VLC on Fedora 24, this is getting rather silly. There are no previous versions that work!

What kind of information is needed to work out what the computers have in common?

The original problem seems like a problem between Fedora and Qt5. Not much help to be had here then.

(The HiDPI bug is probably a VLC issue though.)

VLC 3.0 preversions work quite well here. So without details, I'll have to blame that last post on Fedora packaging or trolling.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to troll. And I've crossed threads, inexplicably. My second computer won't run vlc at all with Fedora 25. This computer has problems with crashing and unpredictable seizures. It seems that version 3 has many problems with Fedora 25 on these computers.
